Brazil vs Semifinals by JerryDrake

This is a bet offered by William Hill. Brazil are offered with odds 1.83 to reach the Top 4 at the World Cup.

I think that Brazil will have a straight way to the semifinals, this meaning that the host of the World Cup Brazil 2014 will have to play 7 games: 3 in the group stage, 1 in the Round of 16, 1 in the QF, 1 in the semifinals and 1 final (1st-2nd place or 3th-4th place).

Group stage

The Selecao will have one major target in the group stage: to arrive 1st in the group. In this way the would reach the Round of 16 as "A1" and in their way to the semifinals they will have the teams C1, E1 and G1. Having a look at the favorites of each group we can imagine that they will be Colombia, France and Germany. By arriving second, Brazil would risk to meet B1, D1, F1 and H1 (they could be Spain, Italy, Argentina and Belgium). They would prefer Colombia rather than Spain or Italy in the Quarter Finals.

A look at past hosting teams

From 1978 until today I remember many great hosting teams and some weak teams. Strong ones: Argentina in 1978, Italy in 1990, France in 1998, Germany in 2006 the strong ones, Spain in 1982, Mexico in 1986, USA in 1994, South Korea and Japan in 2002, South Africa in 2010 the weak ones. As you can see, it is tradition that a strong hosting team arrives in the top 4 as Argentina won the World Cup in 1978, Italy arrived 3th in 1990, France won the World Cup in 1998 and Germany arrived 3rd in 2006.

Voa, canarinho voa

Behind the Brazilian players there will not be only one country. It will be a big part of the world to follow the matches of the Canarinhos, in every country. Even in Italy we will have many people waiting for a good performance of the Selecao (if they dont play against Italy). A "Maracanazo" can happen, no doubts about it, but until the semifinal it will not happen in my opinion. The semifinal is a target that Brazil must reach, the final is the target that Brazil should reach, to win the cup is the dream that can become reality. (And they would become hexacampeao). For our bet lets concentrate in what should be "sure".

A strong and expert team

It doesnt happen that often to see a young strong team like Brazil having this high degree of experience. Starting from the attack: Neymar (Barcelona) 48/31, Fred (Fluminense) 33/16, Hulk (Zenit SP) 34/9. Midfield: Oscar (Chelsea) 30/9, Ramires (Chelsea) 42/4, Paulinho (Tottenham) 25/5. Defense: Dani Alves (Barcelona) 74/6, David Luiz (Chelsea) 35/0, Thiago Silva (PSG) 45/2, Marcelo (Real Madrid) 30/4. Not enough? Jo, Bernard, Hernanes, Luiz Gustavo, Willian, Fernandinho, Maicon, Dante, Henrique. Maxwell. My only concern is the goalkeeper as Julio Cesar plays for Toronto. Maybe we will see Victor or Jefferson? Brazil have a young and strong attack and a series of strong and experienced defenders. Perfect. Usually they have weak points but they dont have this time.

My prediction

I think that Brazil will make 7 or 9 points in the Group A (leaving maybe one point for Cameroon in the 3rd game if they will keep energies for the Round of 16), they then should defeat Holland or Chile in the Round of 16 (but they would defeat even Spain), and Colombia or England (or Uruguay) in the QF (I must hope that Italy will arrive first, if not we will be the victims of Brazil in the QF). At this point they can meet France or Germany in the semifinal.

Everything is a should-could but I consider this odds a good medium-term investment.

no Jerry no...

i am sorry to tell you that you are totally wrong.
please verify your data because Brazil will play with Spain or Holland, then, team from Group of Italy and then Germany.....

looking at Brazil, i'm not so sure that they will go so far. they are missing both wing defenders. they dont defend and this is a big handicap.

Pitja, a1-b2,c1-d2. team from group of italy but the 2nd placed. now it would be: brazil (a1) vs. Chile (b2), Colombia (c1) vs. Italy (d2). But I hope that Italy will arrive d1 and go to the 'Argentinian' side.

well Jerry, I don't know if you are watching Brazil how it plays. with these way of playing Brazil will not qualify from the 1st round. You can not win matches with players like Fred, Paulinho.

Brazil are underperforming. Normal, they want the semifinals. When it comes to real matches they will be ready. Top hosting teams always reach the semifinals: 2006 Germany 3rd, 1998 France 1st, 1990 Italy 3rd, 1978 Argentina 1st, 1974 Germany 1st, 1966 England 1st. Spain 1982 out - but Spain were not top team compared to Argentina with Maradona, Brazil with Zico, Italy with Juventus columns and Germany with Rummenigge. Good or not good, Brazil will make it to the semifinals. And FIFA have this business model.

well Jerry, after yesterday match against Cameron, i dont think that you still look Brazil at Semis. a very weak team, no wing defenders, no midfield (in creating not desctruct the others game), no attacking. Only Neymar cant do anything more.
Brazil doesnt play anymore like Brazil used to.
