Netherlands vs Outright by Topspin77

Netherlands can win the Fifa World Cup 2014 and as the odds are ridiculous for me I decided to invest some money in the outright, in an equal proportion to the odds between these 3 sides: Germany, Argentina and Netherlands.

I will talk about the main favorites first.

Brazil is still a young side, in development and are far from that experience of the players that can push them in such a position. Playing home is not always an advantage and the pressure will be huge on them.

Argentina have some good chances, I'd say bigger than Brazil's as they are a team that loves to be hatred, here have such treatment, they got great results in Italy 1990 and have a great quality side. Is Messi gonna be different than in the last 2-3 months at Barcelona? Big question ...

Germany is a team with experience, a team with a system of playing, but playing in South America might be something that they will not gonna like too much. They have some used players and that might be felt in the results.

Spain, most of the players are from Barcelona and we all know how Barcelona played. These guys have won everything and that might be a factor of not performing as they did before!

Netherlands has for me 6 reasons for getting the win:

1. Louis van Gaal is a very experienced manager and he just accepted an offer from Manchester United. He will give his best to get the best from his players.

2. There are phenomenal players inside the Netherlands team such as Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie, Dirk Kuyt, Wesley Sneijder, Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Nigel de Jong and Rafael van der Vaart, players that are playing in their final tourney. Together with the likes of Blind, de Guzman, Promes, Lens and Wijnaldum they are forming a very good mix of quality and experience.

3. The team has two bad memories: the Euro 2012 and the 0-1 final loss with Spain in 2010. They are surely gonna be looking to repair that image. First occasion: Spain in the same group!

4. Holland lost three WC finals, they have done it well in every continent they have played, went for final phases, is in their nature to play great football and have good results.

5. The fans are always there and are gonna be in a huge number here too.

6. Holland is going unbeaten for 19 games in last 20 matches which is showing their strength. The defeat came in a friendly with France.

I see the odds clearly huge and I get them with confidence!pin

First of all, I respect you posting your prediction. Leaving you exposed to criticism from people who disagree. Unfortunately I'm one of them.
To start off, I'd like to tell you that I'm a Dutch citizen. And I honestly doubt that the Dutch are able to win the World Cup this year for the following reasons:

- they are only fielding one defender with any major international experience, Ron Vlaar. Meaning the other defenders all play in the Dutch Eredivisie, which has been a league that has been going down in overall quality for the last few years. Those defenders are not used to playing a

I think Netherland will win their group as I think will make a draw with Spain - if not a win and will take them on goal difference.
I remeber when Romania was great in 1994, was playing like most of the Mourinho's teams and many people in Romania was cheptical about our chances. So I also respect your opinion, but I think 34.00 is an odd not to be refused esepcially if it is to combine it like I did!

Should be even bigger odds, not an absolute chance. Too much inexperience in defence, Spain miles ahead of Holland, think Chile could even beat them.

Sorry Topspin, but my scepticism of Holland not winning it, is purely based on the lack of quality in defence.
Also Brazil isn't as inexperienced as you may suggest. There are a few younger players in their squad, but they all play for some of the world's top squads. Neymar at Barça, Oscar at Chelsea, and Lucas at Chelsea.
Also the organizing countries that have had a competitive squad, have always done very well in the tournament. They will have an edge over any country, playing at home.
In the end it will all be very unpredictable, like predicting the Champions League winners at the

For me there is a reason the odds are at 34. They are very weak in defence and are very reliant on Robben and Van Persie. Sneijder is a shadow of his former self in recent seasons. They looked impressive in qualification because the opposition was poor and I can see similaritys between the group in Euro 2012 and there World Cup group where exited early when they played tough opisition in Portugal and Germany, good luck anyway

Best of luck, although I personally see the Netherlands being one of the biggest flops of the European teams.. out in the group. Chile and Spain to advance, mark the words ^^

Nonetheless, hope for an entertaining world cup!

Hi topspin77.
It can be surprise for you, but I like this bet. Everybody is talking about Brazil, Germany, Spain and Argentina. Someone prefers Belgium or Colombia like surpise of the WC2014. But everybody forgets about finalist from WC2010 - Netherlands. Diego Maradona, football legend favourites Netherlands to be a success in this tournament.
They might not win, but I say, that Netherlands will beat brazil in first round like a second team from group B. :-)

Durman I am surprised you thought you surprised me! I invested 300 Euro in a mix of proportional odds for the three sides!

Durman, with all due respect, Maradona was one of the greatest soccer players of all time, but he absolutely hasn't been a good coach after his playing career. As goes for most of the absolute best players that have ever played the game. When Maradona makes a prediction like that, you should take it with a grain of salt. Now if a guy like Mourinho would make this prediction.... I'd be all ears...

Thurdemur: I did not inspire by Maradona, I only gave an exapmple. Yes he was not good coach, but he predicted for instans, that Brazil will win Confederation Cup and that is right.

Holland will not get no where near winning the world cup this time.

If you cant defend, forget it, you will not win the World Cup.

Brazil for a change have good defence and more importantly have good holding midfielders: Ramires, Paulinho, Fernadinho, David Luiz.
But the only thing that will let Brazil down is their Strikers. They don't have a top quality striker so I think they will do well but will not win the world cup.

Argentina look good in all department to do well.

But France for me at odd of 23/1 look very good. They are difficult to beat, they have a good draw and should

Mission Impossible this bet.....spain will win the group so the Netherlands can be 2nd. But then they play against the first of the group where Brasil is in it. Anyway, tha way to the final is allready a mission impossible for this generation of players from the Netherlands....
Anyway, I better outsider would be Columbia I think...

Even if the Dutch finish first in their group, they might face Uruguay in the quarter final, Uruguay has much more quality and seems eager to set things straight after the 2010 semi-final. My bet is Holland to slightly lose to Brazil in the second round.
