Jankovic vs Barthel by Tennisguy

Jankovic
VS
Barthel
This is first round match from the Stuttgart WTA tournament(indoor clay) between Jelena Jankovic from Serbia and Mona Barthel from Germany.

Jankovic is ranked nr.8 and Barthel 87. They have met only once in a match that took place in 2012 at the Miami tournament(hard court) which Barthel won 6-0, 6-3.

Barthel is a lucky looser here as she played the qualifiers without managing to win her last match she had against Ajla Tomljanovic. She played well agaisnt Tomljanovic and she has got a good result in the past here in Stuttgart where in 2012 she reached the quarterfinals loosing to Azarenka in a tight 3 setter 6-4, 6-7(3), 7-5. She is struggling with her game for some time and that is probably why she has fallen in the rankings and why the odds are so big for her. That being said she does have moments when her game looks as good as it was a year ago so it might be a little bit unpredictable but I believe she could have a real chance.

Jankovic never really liked to play here in Stuttgart even if she is more of a clay court player. She only managed to get to the 2nd round maximum in this tournament so I believe she has trouble adjusting with the indoor clay conditions. She played some clay court this year and even manged a final at the Bogotá WTA where she lost to Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-4. Jankovic is a good player but she also has her series of downswings and because she doesn't really feel comfortable at this tournament she might have problems.

Barthel will surely have the crowd support in this one and she already has a win against Jankovic, and a very easy won if I might add. I think the german player will raise her level because she got a great opportunity with the LL card. It might be unpredictable but I believe there is a lot of value in backing Barthel in this one.
