Chelsea suffered a surprise defeat against Sunderland in their last league game. They took an early lead through a Samuel Eto's goal but then Sunderland equalized due to a mistake from the Chelsea's second goalkeeper Schwarzer and they scored a second from a non-existent penalty. Without Petr Cech as goalkeeper, Chelsea looked very vulnerable in defence. He will be back tonight. Nevertheless, they still boast the best defence in English Premier League. Mathematically, Chelsea can still win the league but realistically, it does not seem to be possible. As such, Chelsea will give their all in Champions League. Defender Ivanovic (33/3), midfielders Matic (14/0), Salah (7/2) and striker Eto (21/9) are expected to be out.
This is a Champions League game and league matches cannot be used as a reference to judge the teams as this competition is completely different. The motivations and tactics will all change. Mourinho has played against Atletico Madrid several times during his time in Spain and he certainly knows the team very well. He played 9 times against them, won 8 times and lost only once.
In my opinion, the match is 50-50 and it can go either way. This will be a tactical battle between two great managers and Mourinho has studied Atletico Madrid since a very long time.
He stated: "I have watched Atletico play a lot of times and from the moment we got them in the draw I've watched them play with better eyes. I've studied and analyzed them a lot and I have prepared my players in the best way possible. I have a plan to get the result we want."
Both teams play a similar style of football and from my point of view, it is very possible that they will cancel each other. In other words, Mourinho will most probably employ defensive tactics to at least get a draw. Even if he has to park the bus, he will do it because only the result matters here. Besides, Mourinho is famous for his methods of grinding results against the big teams.
In fact, they have defeated many high profile teams this season (Liverpool (home), Manchester City (home and away), Arsenal (home and away (league cup)) but they lost points against relegation battlers. He does mistakes sometimes but he also learns from his mistakes. So, if we follow the trend, Mourinho's team performs outstandingly against the big teams.
From a betting stand point, I prefer to back the team with the better odds and the manager who has shown on many occasions that you should never write him off. I don't think Chelsea will lose. A draw/win for Mourinho's team is very more likely here in my opinion.
