40 years after playing their last Champions semifinal, Atletico will host Chelsea in the first leg of the 2013-2014 Champions League semifinals. In the other semifinal there will be the second 1974 finalist and winner, Bayern Munich. Stadium Vicente Calderón is ready for this challenge: Atletico are undefeated in their own stadium in CL (5-0-0, 14-2) as well as in the Spanish league (15-3-0, 48/9).
My name is Nobody
In the interviews pre-match all interviewed Atletico players stated the same concept: “We have won nothing”. No better way to prepare this match. Atletico players are self-confident but also realistic and humble, prepared and moderate in their statements and thoughts. The same as their trainer: Simeone: “Mourinho is better than me”. Mourinho: “Simeone is not better than me”. Are they both right or both wrong? In my opinion Simone scored the first goal giving a good psychological advantage to his team.
Mourinho stated in an interview in February: “We dont have a goalscorer. Samuel Eto'o. Yes, Eto'o, but he is 32, maybe even 35, I dont know”. A report in a newspaper suggested Eto'o was 39. No matter his age, he will not play tonight due to injury. Who surely is 35 is Frank Lampard, 36 in June. He is not injured but he will not play. Thibaut Courtois is 21 and he is the goalkeeper of Atletico Madrid on loan from Chelsea. The Londoners vetoed him through a penatly clause in the loan agreement but the UEFA told that the Blues cant stop Atletico keeper playing. Eto'o, Matic, Saleh and Ivanovic are all out for different reasons, Simeone will miss only Turan. Torres could play against his old team.
The way to Lisbon
Young and old, modest and immodest, all will want to reach the final to be played at “Estadio da Luz” on May 24 in Lisbon. The story of the season shows a continous development of the team coached by “El Cholo” who has a virtual 10 points advantage on Chelsea (Atletico 85 points in Spain, Chelsea 75 in England). The Quarter Finals have shown how difficult it is to eliminate the Blues: PSG won 3-1 in Paris and they Chelsea qualified anyway. Simeone knows that if Atletico want to reach the final they must win tonight and try not to concede goals. The statistics I wrote at the bottom of my preview show the clear numeric differences between the two probable line-ups tonight. I bet on Atletico with Asian Handicap -1.
