San Nicola Thursday
Undefeated in the last 7 rounds, Bari climbed back the Serie B table and have now 46 points, two points less than the play-offs zone. In the last 6 home games Bari won 5, scored 8 and conceded only one (Siena 2-1, Pescara 1-0, Lanciano 1-0, Avellino 1-0, Cesena 0-0, Empoli 3-0).
Last Saturday Bari won their match in Varese 1-0. When they landed in Bari at Karol Wojtyla Airport they were welcome by hundreds of fans like it happens when a team wins an important trophy. The club was declared bankrupt one month ago and tomorrow there will be a public sale that will decide the future of this club.
30.000 spectators, record in Serie B this season, are expected for this Holy Thursday match at San Nicola Stadium to help their players to score against Latina: Galano is the player who scored the most (34/9) together with Defendi (32/5) and Joao Silva (32/5). Bari can count also on two defenders who have attacking skills: Ceppitelli (31/4) and Calderoni (33/3).
Roma, Lazio and Latina
The town of Latina has been found in 1932 under the name of Littorio. After WW2 it has received the new name of Latina, meaning the new part of Lazio or the „added“ part of Lazio, an antique Italian territory. Lazio is the modern region of the capital of Italy and in football we have seen only two teams from this region in Serie A: Roma and Lazio.
If Latina will promote to Serie A it will be the third regional team, the first one not belonging to the capital. But they would play in Rome at Stadio Flaminio and this is a reason why Lazio and Roma would welcome their promotion: they would have a new derby. The key player who can help Latina to promote is Federico Viviani, a Roma player on loan to Latina. His father played for Lazio.
After suffering a series of three defeats with Trapani, Modena and Pescara, the team from Latium novum restarted their race to Serie A by defeating Carpi (1-0 H), Reggina (1-0 A) and Novara (4-1 H). Their best scorers are Jonathas (29/13),and Jeffé (19/4, only 648 minutes played) with the support of Cottafava in the defense, Alhassan and Viviani in the midfield. In the next round Latina will have to play with Palermo at home. If they keep collecting good results they can try to reach Empoli and promote as second without having to play the play-off games.
Tonight the weather forecast predict heavy rain. The clouds over Bari will not leave the town for the next 24 hours at least and the temperature should be around 10 degrees Celsius with strong wind (around 25 km/h).
I am aware of the fact that Bari are motivated, supported by a high number of warm fans (tonight there will be a new record of spectators in Serie B for this season) and by the possibility to be lead by a new business group.
I am aware also of the fact that Latina could be satisfied with the play-offs and that they risk to have a difficult night in Bari, above all if there will be a lot of rain.
Still, I remember many years ago a team like Ancona with good players and weak financial situation which won many games in a row and, 4-5 games before the end of the season, they were very close to fight for a promotion to Serie A. All fans were excited, the city, the club, the players. Result: many defeats and poor results.
Even in this beautiful emotional moment of the home fans this time I am for Latina: Latina are doing well, they have two great strikers and solid team and also good reserves.
True that they have not won many on the road, but we are now at the end of the season and you must win games. They will play in front of 30.000 fans of the home team. They can get scared or even motivated. If they want to play derby games with Roma and Lazio they must get used now. I bet Latina with Asian Handicap. Correct score: Bari - Latina 1-2.
