These two teams know each other very well which is indicated by their results against each other this season. With 1-1,0-0, 0-0 and 1-1 as the facts this season, it is clear that both teams knows how to handle the attacking firepower on the opposite team. This was the scenario in the first meeting last week on Camp Nou (1-1) were the hard working defensive unit of Atletico Madrid made it a lot more difficult for Barcelona to get through with their play. Only sometimes with Messi, Iniesta and Neymar did they succeed as they made clever runs and smart passes.
However, I do not necessary see a scoreless draw in this meeting. The facts are clear as Barcelona must score goals in order to not getting eliminated. Another fact will be that I do not think that Atletico Madrid will go all out on a 0-0 draw in front of their home fans. A more efficient Atletico will automatically give the creative players of Barcelona a lot more working space than they got at home. I think that an early goal could set this match on fire.
Barcelona has two important absences tonight as both Victor Valdes (26 games) and Gerard Pique (25/2) will be out. The veteran Jose Manuel Pinto (7 games) will take Valdes’ place. He has only played 25 league games for Barcelona since 2008, and he looked shaky in several situations in the first leg.
However, Atletico Madrid may have an even worse scenario. Arda Turan (26/3) is confimed not to play on Tuesday’s press conference by coach Diego Simmone. On the other side he hopes that their superstriker Diego Costa (30/25) could start after getting his knee injured in the first leg. However, it looks very uncertain that he will start, as he did not participate in the final training session on Tuesday evening. He is among the players that are named by the coach on the same press conference though.
Summarywise, Barcelona has done very good away from home in important matches over the recent period. They have beat Manchester City (0-2) and Real Madrid (3-4), and today I expect them to deliver what is needed in order to proceed. Atletico will be weakened without their playmaker Turan, but if Costa will be missing as well, Barcelona should have the best possibilities here.
