The highest result achieved by Della Valle has been the Europa League semifinal played and lost against Rangers Glasgow in 2007-2008 and the Coppa Italia semifinal lost against Inter in the season 2009-2010.
Udinese have qualified to the semifinals by defeating Inter 1-0 at home and Milan 2-1 at San Siro. Fiorentina qualified by playing both games at Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence: 2-0 to Chievo and 2-1 to Siena.
The head to head statistics is very balanced: 15 wins for Udinese, 14 draws and 13 wins for the Viola whereas the last 9 overall meetings between these clubs have seen a favourable tradition for the Bianconeri: 7 wins out of 9 games: 1-0 in 2006, 3-1 in 2008, 3-1 and 0-1 in 2009, 2-1 in 2010, 2-0 in 2011, 0-1 in 2012 and 3-1 and 1-0 in 2013.
This year Fiorentina have obtained much better results than Udinese: 20-6-6 for Fiorentina in the three competitions (Serie A, Europa League and Coppa Italia) and 11-3-14 for Udinese in the same three tournaments.
Fiorentina's main target this year is to qualify to the Champions League, they are now three points behind Napoli but, at the same time, Diego and Andrea Della Valle wish also to win their first tournament as they are still alive in Coppa Italia and Europa League.
Udinese's principle task is to avoid relegation. As I wrote in my preview “Bologna - Udinese” coach Guidolin was expected to win in Bologna before facing Fiorentina. Now that they won (2-0) Guidolin stated that it “would be a dream to reach the final”.
In Bologna Guidolin has had the audacity to let his third goalkeeper make his Serie A debut. Simone Scuffet, 17 years old, comes from Remanzacco in the province of Udine, 25 Kilometers away from Mariano del Friuli, birthplace of 1982 World Champion Dino Zoff. He played a great game. His parents heard the news that their son would be in the starting eleven 5 minutes before the game started. As they heard this news they left home and ran to a cafe in order to see their son playing on TV.
For this match Guidolin should start with Scuffet as goalkeeper, Heurtaux, Naldo and Domizzi in the defense as Danilo is not available, in the midfield there should be Widmer, Badu, Pinzi, Fernandes and Gabriel Silva, and the strikers will be two among Nico Lopez, Muriel and Di Natale.
Fiorentina will miss defender Tomovic, midfield players Ambrosini and Aquilani (who scored a hat-trick against Genoa) and strikers Rossi and Gomez. Borja Valero and Cuadrado are available again.
The finalist will be decided in the second leg in Florence. For this first leg I see a high motivation on the home side. After losing five in a row in Serie A they have defeated Bologna and won both games in Coppa Italia. Fiorentina have started their 2014 slowly as they won only one Serie A game out of four, probably due to the many injuries they suffered, and they won against Siena in Coppa Italia.
In these last weeks Fiorentina have not created the high volume of play as usual while at the Udinese side Uruguay young player Nico Lopez seems to be fit and motivated after scoring in Milan and in Bologna. Together with Colombian National player Muriel, he can make a difference tomorrow. Correct score: 2-1.
