Wigan is really fired up for this one, the stadium will be packed and everybody wants a first european home win today. It`s a really special thing for this side to be playing international football and Owen Coyle said that Europa League is a priority and he will not make changes to the side that lost against Watford over the weekend.
Maribor is really poor, despite leading the Slovenian League they have no business playing in the group stages of European Competitions. They were blown out at home by Rubin Kazan in the EL opener, 2-5 and are in a bad run of form in the league. Maribor changed the coach before this game. One of their best players and main goalscoeres, Mendy, was a reserve player for the second team of romanians Dinamo Bucharest a couple of seasons ago, so you can imagine the level of Maribor. I watched them in the UCL qualies and they were very poor against APOEL and Plzen, despite being very lucky to knock out the struggling cypriots.
Wigan: Carson – Shotton, Rogne, Perch, Barnett – Watson, Gomez, McArthur – McClean, Fortune, McManaman
Maribor: Handanovic – Rajcevic, Mejac, Trajikovski, Cvijanovic – Mezga, Mertelj, Filipovic, Mendy – Tavares, Fajic
Wigan is a second division team and is hit by injuries, but the Lactics showed they belong at this level with a draw at Zulte Waregem in the EL first round, a much tougher match than this one. Expect poor Maribor to collapse under pressure in England and Wigan to get an enthusiasthic win. If the Lactics did not have problems in attac I`d be 'sure' of the handicap, but as things stand I'll take a safety net that will pay off in case of a 1 goal win.
