After winning the League Cup and finishing 9th last year, Swansea is set for an even better season. The welsh team acquired Wilfried Bony from Vitesse for a club-record 12 million pounds, and the striker immediately made an impact, scoring twice against Malmo in the 3rd qualifying round of EL and once against Manchester.

Swansea looked great in friendlies, then defeated Malmo 4-0 aggregate (4-0 home, 0-0 away), only to lose heavily to Manchester United in the first round of the Premier League. With a solid squad quality-wise, with great cohesion and a very good manager in Brian Laudrup, Swansea is a team to watch this year.

A very important fact is that the hosts are very focused on Europa League, this being their first continental cup campaign. Laudrup has stated many times how important this competition is for the club, and he will field something close to his best available team today:

Probable lineup: Vorm – Rangel, Chico, Amat, Taylor – Britton, Shelvey, Michu – Hernandez, Bony, Routledge

Swansea plays Tottenham on sunday, so this is a relevant factor, but as I said they are really motivated for the Europa League, so I don`t think it should be an issue.

Petrolul is a decent team, they finished 3rd last year in Liga 1, also winning the cup. Despite this, the visitors are still far away from the level required at this stage of european football, and there is no comparing them to Swansea. The romanians also lost their best player over the summer break, top-goalscorer Bokila.

Petrolul knocked out Vitesse in the last round of Europa League, 1-1 at home and 2-1 away. It was a very tight tie, Vitesse maybe playing a little bit better, but nevertheless it was a great achievement for the romanians. But aside from the 2 legs against the dutch, Petrolul was in rather poor form this season, losing the supercup 3-0 to Steaua and gaining only 2 wins and 3 draws from the first 5 matches in the Liga 1.

Probable lineup: Pecanha – Achim, Alves, Enza-Yamissi, Guilherme – Hoban – Boudjemaa, de Lucas, Grozav – Dore, Younes

With motivation not being an issue for Swansea, I expect the difference in quality to be reflected on the scoreboard tonight. With the Bony-Michu partnership up front, Swansea can score some goals, especially since Petrolul is not a great defensive team. Also note that the visitors are not so good when playing away from home.

Swansea is a good solid team that knows how to subdue lesser opponents, and surely they want to erase the memory of that 1-4 against United with a big win in this game.
