Mexico vs Italy by Jamesington

A tough match to call with plenty of reasons for both teams not to lose, but not so many to indicate why either team would actually win.

Neither team has been in terrific form lately, Italy have drawn 4 of their last 6 matches and Mexico an incredible 8 of their last 9.

Of Mexico's past 6 matches, 4 have finished goalless (0-0) and Italy's most recent competitive fixture was a stalemate with the Czech Republic (followed up with a draw against Haiti.

With Cesare Prandelli stating that he would treat this tournament as a rehearsal for the World Cup Italy are likely to take things seriously from the off, this game also represents Andrea Pirlo's 100th appearance for his nation, so I can not see the Mexican's winning. However a draw might suit both sides as they are very much likely to be fighting for 1 qualification place, with Brazil likely to take top spot in the group.

Although Italy are arguably a stronger side they will be tired after a long season in Europe and the great distances involved in travelling to Brazil for the tournament so they may not be 100%. With Mario Balotelli an injury doubt the Italians have their main goal threat taken from the team too.

All signs in this match point towards a cagey affair, likely to end in a low-scoring draw.
