Ferrer vs Edmund by Vilcox
David Ferrer is a typical clay court player. He doesn't like to play on hard courts and his results on this surface are not that good. Before this tournament, he played two tournaments in Bastad and Hamburg. He won in Bastad playing amazing and defeating very dangerous opponents (Verdasco or Dolgopolov for example) but in Hamburg the dream stopped as Ferrer lost in the 2nd round against Delbonis. I have to say that match was absolutely ridicolous...Ferrer was leading 5-1 in the first set and he still managed to lose 7-5!! Also, he was not able to change things in the 2nd set that he lost 6-3. That was a very disappointing loss that show that his not that sure of himself in my opinion...He is not the same of the old times as a strong player can't lose a set up 5-1... Both of these two tournaments (Bastad and Hamburg) were on clay, so he will play his first hard court matches after a 13 days of break.
David Ferrer played 7 matches on hard courts this season and he is 3-4. His only very good win was against Tomic (his first match of the season) as the other two came in the first rounds of Australian Open against poor opponents (Jasika and Escobedo).
Kyle Edmund, on the other hand, plays very good on this surface. After a terrible grass court season, he has already played two tournaments on hardcourts in Atlanta and in Washington. He was stopped in the semifinals against Harrison in 3 sets in Atlanta while he lost in the 2nd round in Washington against Dimitrov in 3 sets (he was a little bit unlucky in that deciding set as he had his chance to take a one break lead). He is 10-9 on hard courts this season.
It's clear that Edmund will feel much more comfortable than David Ferrer on this surface. He is much more better player than the spanish and he has already played 6 matches on hard courts after the grass season. On the other hand, as I said before, this will be first hard court match for Ferrer after two clay court tournaments. I see Edmund big favourite and odds should be even around 1,40 in my opinion.
