Muller vs Isner by Vilcox
First semifinal scheduled for today in Atlanta between Gilles Muller and John Isner. This will be the best match of the tournament as these two players are the main favourites to win the ATP 250 of Atlanta.
Gilles Muller (number 22 in the world) is in amazing form. He played maybe the best tennis of his life during the grass court season as he won in S-Hertongebosch dropping only a set in the whole tournament and he lost in the semifinals in London. Also, before Wimbledon, he lost only in the semifinals in London. In Wimbledon, he was just incredible: he won against Rafael Nadal (15-13 in the 5ht set) and he lost only in the quarter finals against a super Marin Cilic. After Wimbledon, he had a 2 week of break and he had time to recover his energy. To be honest, he is not playing that good as he is committing a lot of unforced errors (especially yesterday in the first set against Tommy Paul) but his serve is clearly his best weapon and he is still unbroken in the tournament. In fact, Muller conceded 2 break points against Halys in the same game (he won in 3 sets) and 4 break points against Tommy Paul (alwaysin the same game) saving them all. In the worst times of the match, he is always ready with an ace or a big serve (as happened yesterday). Yesterday, he collected 13 aces only in the first set and 16 in the whole match (he won 6-3/6-1). He won 76% of points with his first serve (28/37) and 50% with his second serve (12/24). It's clear that he will focus on his service games and I don't think that Isner will break him in the first set.
John Isner (number 20 in the world) , on the other hand, is in an hot streak as he won 6 matches in a row in straight sets. He is coming to this tournament after winning in Newport. In that tournament, even his returning game was absolutely outstanding as he was able to break his opponent in 7 of the 8 sets played. In fact, he played only a tiebreak in that tournament and this is very strange for him. Also, he won that tournament without conceding a single break point! Just ridicolous! In Atlanta, he continued this way. He won in straight sets against Pospisil 6-3/6-4 and Lacko 7-5/6-4. His service games were without story especially against Pospisil. In fact, he conceded only ONE point when serving in the first set and he lost only 4 points with his serve in the whole match!! After 5 matches without conceding a single break point, Isner conceded a break point against Lacko but he was still able to save it. He won 76% of points with his first serve (38/44) and 50% with his second (7/14) with 13 aces and 0 double faults.
Both players are big servers and both are playing amazing level of tennis. Muller conceded more break points than Isner but he was still able to save every single chance gifted to his opponent. Isner, on the other hand, conceded only 1 break point in the last 6 matches played. I think that a tiebreak will decide the first set.
