Tonight there is an important game in Europa League for the Romanian community, played on National Arena from Bucharest. Dinamo Bucharest, the most beloved team in Romania, will host Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of the 3rd Qualifying round. The fans of Dinamo are the only ones in the country who act like real supporters, with special choregrapys and torches, the rest of the teams have only spectators and this is because of the mess in recent history when old-tradition clubs were thrown into lower divisions because of bankruptcy.
It was the case of Dinamo to miss the European Competitions for the last 5 years because of financial problems, insolvency and stuff like that, otherwise the "red dogs" were a yearly presence, at least in qualifying phases.
The coach of Dinamo, Cosmin Contra, is no stranger of the spanish football, having played in La Liga for many years and also coached La Liga teams. So the spanish club football is well-known to him. At the press conference he seemed confident that a good game might be possible and he has absolutely no injuries/suspensions. The left-back, Steliano Filip, will most likely leave the club to Dinamo Kiev, he is a good young prospect, and he has a very good relationship with the fans, so he will give his best. This doesn't mean necessarily that he will be able to do anything, but let's take the individual motivational factor into account.
Bilbao is clear favourite, but their away record in general is awful, especially in European adventures: In 2012-2013 they played 2 qualifying rounds to reach the group stage where lost 1-2 in Croatia at Slaven Koprivnica and drew 3-3 at HJK Helsinki. Also, in 2015-2016 they drew 0-0 in Azerbaidjan with Inter Baku and lost 2-3 in Slovakia at Zilina.
Dinamo managed a series of great matches in European competitions in the past, but they had great individual players at that time, now the problem is the team has absolutely no european experience. The final outcome is hardly to predict, i would take the +1 Asian Handicap on the hosts, but their recent defeat in the last game 0-1 on home ground against an average team like FC Botosani makes me think twice about it.
And i find the value in goals today. Dinamo usualy creates chances, but also misses a lot. The conversion of attacks into chances is relatively good for this team if we consider the point from Cosmin Contra's takeover. The main problem seems to be the defence, where defenders like Nedelcearu and Maric don't present any confidence to me. The right-back, Romera, is also an unpredictable character, he can hit his team with huge mistakes out of nowhere. In the front line Dinamo is operating a solitary striker, Adam Nemec, the only foreign player from Liga 1 who played for his national team in the WC Qualifiers. He is decent in aerial fights, but slow and predictable. Danger will come from the right flank where the most valuable player of Dinamo, Sergiu Hanca, is able to do some damage with his individual skills.
Now i have talked only about Dinamo because most of you know Bilbao and their team, so there's no use in it. They have a new coach in Cuco Ziganda and this is their first official match of the season. They had 5 friendly games where they recorded a 2.4 goals/game average which comes as an argument for my tip that the chances will be good.
Oh, i almost forgot to mention that Dinamo was the team with the highest average of goals per game in the last season of Liga 1 with 2.66 and 64% of their games have seen at least 3 goals scored!
I am expecting goals at both ends today, and a decent quality show on the pitch!
