The right-hander lasted at least six innings in ten of his previous eleven starts (4-2 with a 2.93 ERA) and at least seven innings in five of his eight home contests (3-3 with a 3.88 ERA).It will be his first start against the Reds, who were limited to two or fewer runs in six of their last nine games (2-7), with a .218 batting average and 24 runs during this stretch.
Severino will be opposed by the Reds right-hander Homer Bailey (2-4 with an 8.56 ERA), who has been pretty inconsistent since his return from the disabled list, as the 31-year-old posted a 1.93 ERA in three of his previous six starts, but gave up 20 hits and 22 runs over 8 2/3 innings in the other three outings.
In his lone start against the Yankees, Bailey yielded 3 runs on 7 hits and struck out seven in 6 1/3 innings of a 6-5 win in the Bronx, but that game was in 2012, while now he’ll face a quite different lineup.
Matt Holliday is hitting .326 (14-for-43) with five doubles, triple, 2 HR, 8 RBI and five walks against Bailey, Chase Headley is 4-for-15 with two doubles, 2 RBI and a walk, while Jacoby Ellsbury has 2 hits in 2 at-bats off him, with a solo home run.Bailey will get his first look at Aaron Judge (.310 BA, 32 HR, 73 RBI, .434 OBP), Brett Gardner (10-for-32 with two doubles, 2 HR, 4 RBI and five runs scored over his past seven games) and Gary Sanchez (.265 BA, 14 HR, 46 RBI, .344 OBP).
Cincinnati All-Star shortstop Zack Cozart (.317 BA, 12 HR, 39 RBI, .402 OBP) tweaked his quadriceps in the eighth inning of Tuesday’s 2-4 loss and is considered day-to-day.
I think that the New York Yankees are capable to cover this handicap.
