In this Champions League Qualification fixture Qarabag will host Sheriff Tiraspol.
Qarabag have won domestic double crown last season, proving once again they are the best team in Azerbaijan. Their European performances have also been formidable, never going down without a fight. Their solid home performances have been the key to their success, and last season they lost only two games. First one was a close defeat to Fiorentina in Europa League 2:1, while the second one was to Inter Baku in the league. They lost all of their preparation games this summer, but looked very good in the previous qualifying round where they beat Georgian champions Samtredia 6:0 on aggregate. They solved that encounter already in the first half of first game, when they established 3:0 lead. They were looking superior in every aspect of the game and deservedly secured convincing victory. They strengthen their team with couple of signings, but there were no spectacular transfers.
Sheriff have started their season very unconvincing and recorded only one win in four competitive matches. They drew both of their league games, while in Champions League they barely managed to progress against Albanian champions Kukesi. They won home encounter 1:0 thanks to penalty, and in the second fixture they were hanging by a thread. After being 2:0 down at half-time, they managed to put themselves in commanding position in 56th minute. However, Kukesi were threatening, and after de Nooijer got sent off in 77th minute, it looked like the hosts will managed to find a net one more time. But it didn`t happen even though they even had a penalty in 81st minute, and Sheriff managed to progress thanks to away goal rule. Sheriff will be without their newest addition de Nooijer, as he is suspended.
Sheriff have been looking unconvincing at the start of the season, and while it`s still early and it takes time for teams to get their game going, this will be very hard trip for Moldavian team. Qarabag have been convincing against Samtredia, and generally speaking their home form throughout the seasons has been at a very high level. Clean sheets have been standard occurence in their home games and it is hard to see Sheriff being a threat here. Qarabag are a more quality team and they should progress here, and to do that they will need a comfortable home win. I think they will get it, and therefore I will back them with -1 asian handicap as I think the odds provide good value.
