Vancouver vs Portland by PatrickBateman
Vancouver are 4th in Western Conference with 27 points. They are in very good position considering they played only 18 games, while some teams played as much as 21. They`ve been petty solid this season, and they are coming here with only one loss in the last six games. They also earned maximum amount of points from the last two matches, beating NYC and LA. Victory in LA will be especially satisfying for them, as their home performances have never been concern, with their struggles coming on the road. Galaxy were dominating and had number of chances, but Vancouver managed to keep their net intact and take all three points thanks to Tchani`s goal in 64th minute. Vancouver will be without Waston who played last night in Gold Cup. as well as injured Levis and Edgar. It is still unclear if Canadian internationals will be available, since they were knocked out by Jamaica couple of days ago.
Portland are 5th in Western Conference with 27 points, but having played 21 games. They have been in terrible form lately, having recorded only two wins in the last fourteen outings. Their home form is what`s been keeping them in the play-off zone, while on the road they are winless in the last eight matches, having lost six of them. They are coming here after a tough defeat at home to Salt Lake. Beckerman gave visitors the lead in 10th minute, with Plata increasing it in 50th from the penalty. Timbers were left with nine men only five minutes later, as both Arboleda and Adi got sent off. Real were also left with a man down, but it was clear that Portland will hardly get anything from the game. Real scored two more, with Barmby making it 4:1 deep in the stoppage time. Portland will miss huge amount of players here, and coach Porter said that only 11 first-team players are available for selection. Adi and Arboleda are suspended, Guzman, Mattocks, Powell and Nagbe are on Gold Cup, while Orokoyo, Barmby, Ridgewell and Okugo are out injured. Also, Myers, Chara and Andriuskeviscius are questionable.
This a clash of two teams with different trends. Vancouver have started to rise up the table and they are looking sure to reach play-offs, while Portland is slipping down more and more with every game. Vancouver have been pretty good lately, and returning of Reyna is giving them boost. It is unkwown if Canadians will be ready here after returning from Gold Cup, but even without them Whitecaps have been looking pretty good. And besides, missings in the other camp are so huge that Porter will need to call up some reserve-team players. All of Timbers` back line is not available, while now they don`t even have their best striker. Last game showed how important all of those absences are for them, when they were trashed at home by below-average Real, and they shouldn`t hope for too much here. Goals could be on the cards here, but since Portland managed to score only in stoppage time last time out, and Vancouver proved they can edge a 1:0 win, I am not confident going in that direction. I think that Vancouver are much bigger favourites than what the odds suggest considering the state of teams and recent form, and while "law of the numbers" says that Portland`s win should come soon, I don`t think it will be here. Therefore, I will pick Vancouver to take three points and continue their ascension up the table.
