In this friendly game Western Sydney Wanderers will host Arsenal.
Wanderers have finished 6th in A-League last season, and finished at the bottom of their AFC Champions League group with two wins and 10:22 goal difference. They were far from winners Sydney FC at the end of the season, having finished with 36 points, which is almost half compering to Sydney`s 66 points. This will be their first game of the preseason, and will enter it with slightly changed squad than last season. Their biggest signing of this window is that of Deportivo`s Oriol Riera who spent last season on loan at Osasuna, and he will be available for this game. Popovich will be without Aspro, Keanu Baccus, Sotirio and Scott who are on international duty with Australia U23 team. Also, some players from Wanderers youth team should get playing time in this match.
This will be Arsenal`s second game of their Australian tour, with the first one being against Sydney FC. Wenger excluded Sanchez, Bellerin and Mustafi from his squad, with all other players being available, including newly-signed Lacazette. Lacazette managed to score his first goal after only 15 minutes on the pitch in the last game, and could appear from the first minute here. Against Sydney, Wenger named mixed line-up, but Arsenal looked very good. They completely dominated the game, scoring two goals and having number of clear opportunities which they didn`t convert mostly thanks to Sydney`s goalkeeper Redmayne. Also, they looked solid in defence, despite Bielik and Kolasinac making their debuts. They didn`t allow Sydney to create a single chance, and deservedly kept clean sheet while they could`ve scored even more. Wenger is likely to rotate again, and Oxlade-Chamberlain, Xhaka, Iwobi and Ramsey could start. The only missing will be that of Walcott, who picked up slight injury in the last game.
I`m not a fan of making picks on club friendlies because of obvious reasons, but coincidentally I ended up watching Sydney - Arsenal game and was surprised how mighty Arsenal was looking. It was their first game of the preseason which they entered with mixed squad, but they looked solid in all aspects of play. It`s true that Sydney are couple of levels beneath Arsenal, but Arsenal completely thrashed them, scoring two goals, missing penalty and having numerous chances, while limiting them to nothing. They will now face Wanderers who are a lot weaker team than their city rivals, and it is hard to see anything but another Arsenal`s comfortable victory. Arsenal have been looking focused and serious, and against Wanderers who will also come with mixed squad, they are clear favourites. With all that being said I will back Arsenal with -1.75 asian handicap, as I can`t see hosts being very competitive in what should be another routine win for Gunners.
