Johanna Konta - Simona Halep
Another very attractive matchup in Wimbledon quarterfinals: Jo Konta, the 1st british woman to reach Wimbledon's quarter finals since Jo Durie did that 33 years ago meets Simona Halep, who will become World no1 player if she wins today.
This matchup is a recent one, as they have 3 h2h meetings in the past, all in the past 2 years. The 1st two of them were won by Konta, in Wuhan 2015 and Miami 2017 while the last one was won by Halep in Fed Cup 2017.
In this prediction I'll focus mainly on the emotional factor, on the mental state of mind these two players have today.
I'll note that the two Konta wins have come after Halep had the matches in her hands but she went down mentally. That's about the old version of Simona, the one which was punishing herself in her mind for missed shots and was loing it all.
The turning point in her mental approach has much to do with the today opponent as it came after that notorius inciodent between Halep and her coach during the Miami matchup against Konta. Then she had it all in her hands, served for the win, lost the game, had 5:3 in the tie-break plus 2 serves ... lost it again and lost the set. At the on court coaching she made it clear that she should have won at those previous occasions and she doesn't believe she can win anymore. Cahill used that moment to shook her in order to have the mental switch we all have seen after that, with the excellent clay court season and now QF in Wimbledon for the 3rd time. Simona has now a different mental approach, she's not suffering anymore on the court but fighting all for the moment, fact that allows her to be more agressive in the key points. She looks very stable these days and this I think will be the keyfactor when playing against a player she knows well and she's aware she can dominate gamewise.
On the other hand I saw Konta's emotions after the win over Garcia and I think she's under a combination of much more emotional energy spent during this tournament (especially against Vekic and Garcia), pressure placed on her shoulders by the british crowd and also pressure brought by the fact that against Halep she's the one who's got more to prove, particularly the fact that she hasn't beat her in the past only due to Halep's mental issues. Though, I think Halep has lost those meetings more than Konta has won them.
I trust Simona has the game, she has now the mental ability to deal with the pressure and she knows how to break down the big serving game of Jo Konta. Today we will have a new no1 in WTA.
Best of luck with your bets ;)
