Australia vs Germany by PatrickBateman
In this Confederations Cup fixture Australia and Germany will face each other at Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi.
ÂAustralia are undefeated in their WC Qualification group, but they are currently occupying 3rd place, with the same amount of points as second-placed Saudi Arabia and a point less than leading Japan. They have four wins and four draws, scoring in every game, but also rarely keeping clean sheet. They were defeated in their last game, when they faced Brazil at home. They lost convincingly 4:0, having been completely outplayed. Brazil took the lead already in 1st minute via Souza, and after the first half finished 1:0, they added three more in the second. It has to be said, however, that Australia started the game without some of their usual starters, and therefore they didn`t really have a chance against strong Brazil side. Australia will most likely play in 3-2-4-1 formation with all of their key players available.
ÂGermany came at this tournament with their "B team", nevertheless, their team still looks capable of beating anyone. The same team faced Denmark in friendly and San Marino in qualifying game. They played 1:1 with Denmark having scored a late goal, while they trashed San Marino 7:0. Wagner scored a hat-trick in that game, while Draxler, Younes, Mustafi and Brandt added one each. Despite San Marino being one of the weakest teams in Europe, 7:0 is still a respectable result, and Low has every right to enter this tournament optimistically. If we are to judge by the last two games, Germany should play in the 3-5-2 formation, with Stindl and Wagner leading the line while captain Draxler should be behind them. Ter Stegen should be on goal, with Hector, Kimmich and Mustafi being at the centre back positions. Midfield should consist of Can, Brandt, Goretzka and Younes.
ÂGermany are favourites for this game, despite coming without their strongest squad. That us because depth of the national pool of Germany is astonishing and this team would be in contention at any tournament. Australia have been looking good lately, and the fact that they haven`t lost a single competitive game in their qualification group should give them reason to believe they can play some part in this tournament. Prior to game against Brazil, they have found a net in each of their last fifteen matches, and I believe they can make their mark here. At the same time, they have rarely kept a clean sheet against opponents who are close to them in terms of quality, and with Germany being objectively stronger than them, it is hard to see Australia keeping clean sheet. Australia will hardly park the bus in front of the goal and hope for the best, instead I think they will play their standard game. Germany will also approach in their usual attacking manner, which should leave space for Australia to exploit, especially knowing how inexperienced this Germany team is. With all that being said, I think we will see goals from both sides, and even though the odds have slightly dropped, they still carry value in my eyes.
