Deportivo vs Celta by PatrickBateman
Deportivo are 15th with 27 points. After a tough period of ten games without a victory, they finally recorded a win two weeks ago in Gijon, beating Sporting 1:0. Prior to that win, they played 1:1 at home against Atletico Madrid, which was first sign of them coming out of crisis. Last week they recorded another good result, beating Barcelona at Riazor 2:1. It was a game in which Barcelona dominated only in terms of possession, while chances were equally divided. Joselu brought Deportivo the lead in 40th minute. However, as soon the teams returned from the break, Suarez levelled the result. The game remained equal, with both teams threatening. In 74th minute hosts took another lead, when Begantinos scored with a header following a corner kick. Barcelona had a couple more chances, but the result stayed unchanged, with Deportivo taking all three points bringing Barcelona back to reality.
Celta are 12th with 35 points. They have been in mixed form lately, failing to win in the last four league games. Also, they suffered defeat in the last two league matches. First they were thrashed at Camp Nou 5:0, after what they lost to Villareal at home 1:0. On the positive side, they progressed to Europa League quarter-final after beating Krasnodar 4:1 on aggregate. After the first leg Celta had a 2:1 advantage, but it was nowhere near over, as Krasnodar scored an away goal. In the second leg, both teams started cautiosly, and at the half-time result was 0:0, without much to separate the teams. After the break, Celta were the ones to find a net first, with Mallo scoring in 52nd minute. Krasnodar were pushing forward, knowing they need at least two goals to equalize the aggregate, but didn`t have much luck. And when Aspas scored second in 80th minute, it was all over. The game finished 2:0 and Celta were in the quarter-final.
Deportivo are coming into the game as favourites, and rightfully so. They have been in good form lately, putting up good results against reputable opponents. Also, they are playing at home. Deportivo failed to find a net only three times at home this season, and coming up against Celta who conceded 10 goals over the course of the last six games, they should be able to score. Also, Deportivo kept only two clean sheets in the last fourteen competitive games, and two at home this season overall. Celta are on a bad run in the league, and latest Europa League success could be morale boosting for them. Despite, Deportivo`s good form, they are still at best an average team, and Celta has every right to fancy their chances. With all that being said, I think we will see goals from both sides, in what should be a close encounter.
