Mainz vs Schalke by PatrickBateman
Mainz are 12th with 29 points. They have been in mixed form lately, recording only two wins in 2017. Their home form has also not been solid, with their only win since the break coming against Augsburg. Last time out they lost to Darmstadt 2:1. The game practically hasn`t even started yet, and Darmstadt were already 2:0 up in 12th minute. Quasion managed to pull one up just before the half-time to keep visitors in contention. After the break Mainz didn`t look like a team that could turn the game in their favour. And even when hosts were left with a man down in 60th minute, Mainz still couldn`t make a serious threat. The game finished 2:1, and Mainz were left with a lot to think about. For this game they will be without suspended Bell.
Schalke are 11th with a point more than Mainz. They have also been in mixed form recently, with their only victory in the last eight competitive games coming last week against Augsburg. However, despite their bad league run this season, they are doing pretty good in Europa League where they are playing in quarter-final. They got there over the back of Monchengladbach, which they knocked out on away goals with a 3:3 aggregate result. After the first game finished 1:1 in Gelsenkirchen, on Thursday they played second leg in Monchengladbach. The game started bad for Schalke, when Christensen scored in 26th minute. Dahoud added another one just before the break, and it looked like Monchengladbach will be the ones to progress here. But visitors came back motivated, and when Goretzka scored in 54th, it looked like they could maybe progress after all. And they got an opportunity, when Clattenburg awarded them penalty in 68th minute. Bentaleb converted it, and it was Schalke now who were up on aggreagate. The hosts were unable to find a net one more time, and Schalke progresses to quarter-final. They will be without injured Baba, Embolo and Naldo.
This is a clash between the two "neighbours" on the table, which is important for both teams since they are very close to relegation zone. Schalke are coming after a morale boosting comeback which saw their Euro campaign continue, but Mainz are playing at home. However, their home performances have been hot and cold this season. Since Schalke haven`t been very successful on the road lately, this match looks like anyone`s to take. The encounter should be a close one, with both teams looking to get something out of it, as their position simply urges them to. Both teams are often having trouble in defense, which makes me think there is a solid chance we will see goals coming from both ends here. The odds are pretty good and therefore worth a try.
