Buducnost vs Vardar by AlQahira

This is my main bet for this weekend: Vardar to win in Podgorica. Since 2013 when the russian Samsonenko started pumping vast sums of money into Vardar between these two teams has developed a strong rivalry, but a rivalry that has been pretty much one sided. This will be the 4th straight season when these two will meet in EHF CL.

In 2013-2014 Buducnost won the semifinal of the final 4 in Budapest after extra time. Next season Buducnost won easily in Moraca and drew in Skopje in the group stage; they met again in the semifinals where the montenegrins thrashed Vardar 27-17. Last season once again these teams met 3 times; Buducnost won the first encounter 31-19 in Podgorica with Vardar winning the next two, one in the MR and one in the battle for the 3rd spot in the final 4 in Budapest.

Even though Vardar won their last two matches those games seemed to hold little importance for Neagu&Co. and Buducnost won the important games, the two semifinals, plus in Moraca, where today's game will be played Vardar stood no chance in their previous two encounters.

But, for the first time I regard Vardar as the stronger team; under David Davis's leadership they seem to be for the first time a real team rather than a collection of superstars. In terms of quality Vardar is right up there with Gyor with world class players on every position.

Buducnost on the other hand has lost important players for this season, primarily their wings, the heart and soul of Buducnost for their big succeses, Mehmedovic and Petrovic; their important LP, Cvijic just recently recovered after a long time injury and she if far from her heyday, K Bulatovic is getting older and is not very reliable even if when she is on she remain a power to be reckoned with, most often she will be a liability.

Most importantly Neagu looked very disappointed after she missed the semifinals with RO at the Euro back in december and her motivation could be slightly dampened as was the case in the fall season after the fiasco with RO at the Olympic Games. All the other player of Buducnost are good at best.

Still I wouldn't write them off; as I said Buducnost at Moraca is very strong, even if they have a considerably weaker side than last seasons Budu has in its ranks the best player in the world, Neagu, Bulatovic or Zoqbi. Pretty much all these three have to play very good or Vardar very very bad, otherwise Vardar should bag an important win here

The risk is worth taking, the odd on Vardar is still way too big even if it has dropped quite significantly (-0,55).
