Las Palmas vs Sporting Gijon by PatrickBateman
Las Palmas finished 2016 in the middle of the table - on 10th place. It was probably exactly where they deserved to be. After stellar start of the season, results have become more realistic. They began the season with two convincing wins and continued to record good results against respectable opponents, mostly powered by their prolific attack. However, the time revealed all of their flaws and lack of quality, and since September they managed to record only two league wins. On Tuesday they lost at home against Atletico in Copa Del Rey, in a game in which they were equal contenders and even had greater possesion, but were unable to make their mark. It has to be said that was their first home loss this season. They will be without injured Araujo and Montoro, while Boateng is questionable.
Gijon finished 18th, having collected 12 points. 2016 showed they will have to fight hard to stay in the top division, as they are one of the worst teams in the league. Their biggest downside was their defense, which was one of the league`s worst, conceding 33 goals in 16 games. After collecting seven points in the first three games of the season, it all went downhill for them, and since win against Leganes on September 11th, they managed to record only one win and two draws. However, they were rarely out of the game, always staying in contention and scoring regularly. They will miss Amorebieta, Castro and Ndi, all injured.
Las Palmas are favourites for this game, but I wouldn`t put my trust in them. They haven`t been convincing lately, and were unable to keep control of the game for the whole 90 minutes. Also, in the last six competitive games, they recorded one win, against Huesca at home in Copa Del Rey 2:1. Gijon on the other hand is still looking for their first road victory this season, but all of their losses except against Atletico came with only one goal difference. Both teams are playing attacking football, scoring and conceding regularly. Las Palmas managed to keep a clean sheet only once in the last twelve games, while Gijon managed only one in the last 16 games. Also, Gijon`s last nine competitive games saw both teams scoring. Since Gijon is capable of scoring anytime form anywhere, with some of their goals being really lucky, Las Palmas shaky defense which lacks focus should concede here. It goes without saying that Las Palmas who suffered only one loss at home this season, and scored in all but two home games, should find a net against Gijon`s defence which concedes 2 goals per game on average. Therefore I see good value in backing both teams to score at the odds of 1.86, especially knowing that some bookies offer that selection at the odds of 1.67.
