Berdych vs Tsonga by Estebaneiro
Berdych doesn't convince me recently, last season he had a worst win/loss record in a long while, and even though the numbers were still good (40/22) the style was somehow worse. In December he participated in ITPL (exhibition games in Asia) and while it's only friendly games in friendly atmosphere, still the style in which Berdych lost to Nishikori (1:6) was quite bad, and Kei could easily win this to nil, but started playing around a little. This way or another, Berdych was clearly dominated.
Last week he also participated in Mubadala in friendly competition and lost both matches - to Nadal, and Tsonga. Tsonga kept the pressure on him most of the time, even in first set which he lost, but he came back in the second, and won the supertiebreak 10-3.
Yesterday against Vesely Berdych also had his ups and downs, losing second set 1:6, and in first round he also somehow struggled in the first set against Giannessi winning in tiebreak.
Tsonga is maybe not the most reliable player around, as he also has his better times and worse, but he surely is a player to be reckoned with. With his solid serve, and powerful shooting he was capable of competing with best players in the world, and he can still do it - last year he reached quarterfinal at US Open, but was forced to retire after second set. I must admit that I haven't seen him playing here, but I saw Berdych and he looked like someone who can be taken down by Jo. Giannessi clearly lacked firepower, Vesely could lack consistency, but Tsonga is a player who has it all, and is also build up by the recent victory in Mubadala. Tsonga to win.
