First round of the UAE President’s Cup
The hosts face the usual problems for any newly promoted team, as Al Ittihad Kalba finished the first half of the season in the bottom half of the standings (11th position / 2-3-8 10/22), with a fragile three-point advantage over the teams in the relegation zone and in addition to that, the hosts were eliminated in the group stage of the League Cup after just one win in six games (1-2-3 6/9).
Al Ittihad Kalba signed several experienced players this summer in Thamer Mohammed (defender / from Baniyas), Salam Shaker (defender / from Al Fateh), Bakare Kone (midfielder / from Wydad Casablanca), Mihai Costea (forward / from Voluntari), Jociel (forward / from Ceara) and Modibo Maika (forward / from Al Nassr), but their efforts are clearly insufficient, given the fact that rest of the players have very little experience at this level.
In the matter of fact, the hosts played well in most of their games in December, as after a 1-3 loss in the visit to Baniyas on Dec. 4, Al Ittihad Kalba took a 2-1 win at home against fellow strugglers Emirates Club, followed by two draws against Al Nasr (1-1/home) and Al Ahli (0-0/away) and a painful 1-2 loss at home against Al Ain on Thursday. On the other hand, this team has obvious problems against the leading teams in the league (0-2-4 4/10 from six games against opponents from top 4) and now Al Ittihad Kalba will face probably the most-balanced team in the Arabian Gulf League this season.
Al Jazira comes from a 4-0 win in the visit to Al Dhafra on Thursday - fourth for this team in five games in December and thirteenth in nineteen competitive games since the beginning of the new season (13-4-2 49/17).The guests have incredible potential in attack in Mbark Boussoufa (m / 5 goals), Khalfan Mubarak (m / 5 goals), Thiago Neves (m / 2 goals), Ailton Almeida (f / 5 goals) and Ali Mabkhout (f / 15 goals), while the defense, which has been the team’s Achilles heel over the past few campaigns, is rock-solid under Henk ten Cate, as the guests conceded only seventeen goals in nineteen games this season.Henk ten Cate already announced that this tournament is a priority for Al Jazira and he won’t make significant changes in the starting lineup.
Al Ittihad Kalba is a hard nut to crack, but it doesn’t change the fact that the guests excel their opponents in terms of experience and individual qualities of the players and what is also important to be noted: this match will be played on neutral ground in Dubai.
I think that Al Jazira will manage to win that game with more than one goal difference.
