Anderlecht vs Mainz 05 by Chilltkroete

Anderlecht is hosting Mainz tonight in the Europa League. Anderlecht is playing a really nice season so far – national as well as international. Coach René Weiler has formed a great team since he took over in summer 2016. At home their style of football is always dominating; you can see pace in their attacks and the right amount of pressure and discipline when they chase ball and opponent. All of this is very impressive for such a very young yet ambitious team.

Of the last 8 games at home Anderlecht only lost one (1 draw / 6 victories). In the Euro League they did not lose a single game (2 draws / 2 victories) and won both of their two games at home without any problems. In Etienne they gave the victory out of their hands in the very last minute. In the first game against Mainz we saw again the very disciplined squad with dangerous counter attacks - especially in the second half. From Anderlecht’s side I do not expect many goals yet with their terrific fans at home there should be able to score at least one. Regarding the squad, I expect Anderlecht to play with their best eleven, there are no major injuries or other absences due to red cards.

The season of Mainz is full of ups and downs. Except Baumgartliner, Mainz was able to hold the squad from last season together adding some extra quality to their offensive line with an in form Cordoba, who needed his time during the last season to accustom himself to the speed of the Bundesliga. Malli was not transferred to Dortmund and thus stays the absolute key player in midfield for Mainz. However, when on the road, Mainz is far away from bringing this quality to the pitch. The game against Qabala was luckily won in the last 30 minutes. Against St. Etienne as well as against Anderlecht Mainz were better but showed how fragile they are when it comes to counter attacks and how nervous their defence can be when the opponent chase them. This is something you can see every weekend in the Bundesliga. That is also why I expect coach Schmidt to change the defensive line again and put Bungert on the bench.

Both teams seem to be able to score here, both want to win it to make a big step to the next round - yet Anderlecht has more advantages on their side to win this game: I expect a very disciplined first half with a maximum of one goal. Mainz will let Anderlecht dominate the game waiting for their chances. However, I do not think that Mainz will stay here without errors for 90 minutes, especially when Anderlecht goes for full pace in the second half with their young and ambitious players.

You could bet on a win for Anderlecht, but I guess to bet on more goals scored in the second half is a better bet when you look at these teams and their younger history.
