Dortmund vs Sporting Lisbon by Chilltkroete
Dortmund had a lot of injured players and suffered from a lack of concentration in their last three games against Schalke (0:0), Union Berlin (3:0 after penalty shootout) and especially against Ingolstadt (3:3) - a game in which they played their worst first half of this season. Sporting on the other side had their best squad available in their last three games. There are some missing players like Jefferson and Bruno Paulista, yet even when fit both are far away from the starting eleven. These last three games revealed the main problem for Sporting: They do not create enough high class chances and if so, they need a lot of them to turn them into goals. Against Tondela (1:1) they were able to avoid the loss very luckily in the last minute of the game. The game was very boring and had only a handful of highlights. Against Nacional (0:0) Sporting was not able to create enough chances within the box. Both teams are at the bottom of the Primeira Liga.
Against Legia and Dortmund the performance of Sporting was okay – yet these were game played at home where the atmosphere is terrific. On the road they were able to shoot a goal against Real Madrid but were dominated 70 minutes of the game, so that it could have ended 5:1. In seven years Sporting was not able to win a single game on the road in the Champions League, losing the last four of them. All of the games had over 2.5 goals.
In the Champions League Dortmund is one of the most powerful opponent due to their fast counter attacks and the speed they bring with Aubameyang, Schürrle and Dembele. True, they were not concentrated enough against Real Madrid, but they had enough chances to turn the game into a victory. Now that many players like Schürrle and Castro come back from injuries the variability in the offense grows more and more. The atmosphere in Dortmund is great and the “yellow wall” will push the players forward.
I expect a dominating game from Dortmund. They will press Sporting as much as they can, trying to get as fast as possible into the box. Tuchel’s plan should be to shoot one or two early goals. If that happens, Sporting will struggle to resist the pressure, however, looking at their last results in league and in the Champions League on the road, I guess they will go down here. I bet on Dortmund to win and over 3.5 goals due to their offensive power.
