Mischa Zverev - Marcel Granollers-Pujol
This is probably the less probable matchup someone would predict at the begining of the tournament, from what we have in R16.
Both these guys have passed over big favourites, though they did it in different fashion.
First, the spaniard got his 1st win after 4 straight losses against Tomas Berdych, reducing the czech's hopes on World Tour Finals contention. Marcel does not appear to have the best period of his carreer, but if we look closely, in the hard courd swing from the 2nd part of the yea he's got decent wins (to Verdasco, Kamke, Vesely, Monaco, Sugita and Berdych) but also he only lost to players currently and generally better than him, as Karlovic, Berdych, Murray and Baghdatis. So my conclusion is that he's not in such a bad form as he apparently looks considering he didn't make long runs in the tournaments. Here he won 4 out of 4 sets, with 7-5, 7-6, 7-6 and 7-6 outcome. This tells me his mental setup is a excellent one at this point.
On the other hand, Mischa Zverev has a good period for his standards, those of a challenger level player. He has a apparently fabulous 21-5 in the same period I've analyzed for Granollers, but these 21 wins, though a excellent run for him, I find them not extremely relevant for the today match. And I'm saying that as most of them (14) have come in qualifiers, and players like Zhu Zhicheng, Zhe Li, Kravtsov Maxim, Milian Zekic, Sekou Bangoura, Alex Sarkissian or Mate Pavic are far from being relevant scalps when we're analyzing a ATP Masters R16 match. His only good wins came on Marchenko, Rosol, Khachanov and Harrison. Plus the intense relationship he's got in the past months with that tennis troll named Adrian Mannarino, from which there's quite nothing to understand as each of them blew the other one of the court but they also had tight meetings.
And we're comig to the yesterday match, when Zverev met a Nick Kyrgios which stunned once again the whole tennis world with a joke of a gameplay which many people called tanking, coming to conflicts with the umpire, with the spectators and offering a R16 qualifying as a unexpected gift to Mischa.
I doubt such a event will not influence the mental status of the german player and I don't expect him to be all business against Granollers. And even if he will be, when playing the 12th match in the last 3 weeks I expect the spaniard to know how to deal with his gameplay (+ his mental and physical level) as he has already showed in all their 3 past encounters.
My money are on Granollers in this matcup.
Let's go green!
