Pittsburgh vs Cincinnati by Sors

Ivan Nova (11-6 with a 4.34 ERA) will start for the Pirates, who ended an eight-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old right-hander posted a 4.86 ERA in fifteen starts for the Yankees earlier this season, but is 4-0 with a 2.89 ERA in his first six starts in a Pittsburgh uniform. One of those six games was against Cincinnati, on Aug. 6, when he yielded 3 runs on 6 hits and struck out five batters over seven innings of a 5-3 win at PNC Park.

Nova will face an opponent with obvious problems in offense, as the Reds were limited to three or fewer runs in nine of their last ten games (1-9), with a .255 batting average, 26 runs and 5 HR over that span.

The Pittsburgh Pirates, on the other hand, have scored four or more runs in six of their last nine games, despite losing eight of them.

Cincinnati turns to Dan Straily (11-7 with a 3.83 ERA), who went 7-1 with a 2.93 ERA in ten starts after the All-Star break.

Straily, however, wasn’t at his best his last two times out, as the right-hander was hammered for 7 runs in 2 2/3 innings of a 2-9 loss at Anaheim on Aug. 29 and gave up a career-high seven walks over 5 2/3 innings in a 9-1 home win against the Cardinals last Saturday. The 27-year-old pitcher is 2-1 with a 3.23 ERA in seven appearances (four starts) against the Pirates.

John Jaso (0-for-9), Gregory Polanco (0-for-7) and Andrew McCutchen (3-for-14) have struggled against him, but Starling Marte has 6 hits in 15 at-bats off Straily, David Freese is 2-for-6 with an RBI, Josh Harrison is 3-for-10 with two solo home runs, Jordy Mercer is 2-for-8, with a double and two walks, while Matt Joyce hit a solo home run in 2 at-bats off him.

I think that the Pittsburgh Pirates will manage to win the opening game of this series.
