Edwin Jackson (3-3 with a 5.36 ERA) will start for the San Diego Padres in Monday’s opener of their three-game series against the major league-leading Cubs at PETCO Park.

The veteran-right hander pitched well in four of his first five starts for his new club, but had serious problems last Tuesday, when he was tagged for 8 runs over four innings of a 1-15 road loss to Tampa Bay.

Jackson posted a 5.91 ERA in eight relief appearances with the Marlins earlier this season and is 3-3 with a 5.83 ERA in his last seven starts against the Cubs, though the last of them was in 2012.

Miguel Montero is hitting .400 (6-for-15), with two doubles, triple, home run, 4 RBI and two walks against him, Dexter Fowler is 3-for-10 with an RBI, Anthony Rizzo has 2 hits in 2 at-bats off Jackson, Jason Heyward is 5-for-20, with a double, home run, 3 RBI and four walks, Jorge Soler hit a solo home run in his lone at bat off him, while Ben Zobrist is 3-for-13 against Jackson, but with two doubles, a homer, 2 RBI and four walks.

The San Diego Padres have averaged 6.50 runs per game while winning three of their last four, but I think that they might have problems in offense tonight, given the fact that the Cubs will send Jon Lester (13-4 with a 2.86 ERA) to the mound for Monday’s series opener.

The 32-year-old southpaw is coming off four straight quality starts, surrendering 18 hits and 5 runs over 25 2/3 innings of a 12-1 home win against the Mariners on July 29, in Oakland on Aug. 5 (7-2), against the Cardinals six days later and in a 6-1 home win against the Brewers last Wednesday.

The left-hander has allowed two runs or fewer in eight of his previous twelve road contests this year and lasted at least seven innings in seven of those twelve outings.

Lester is 1-1 with a 3.44 ERA in three career starts against the Padres, as he yielded 4 hits and 3 runs over six innings in the last of them at Wrigley Field on May 10 (8-7), with four strikeouts.

Alexei Ramirez is 10-for-39, with four doubles, 5 RBI and three walks off him, Wil Myers is 2-for-8, with a double, a solo home run and a walk, but Derek Norris, Brett Wallace and Yangervis Solarte are a combined 3-for-26.

I think that the Chicago Cubs are capable to win that game with more than one run difference.
