After several successful years Villarreal might struggle in this campaign. There were some bad vibes and coach Marcelino was sacked. Fran Escriba has been named as his successor. He's a defensive-minded coach. Escriba is good tactically, but he doesn't have previous experience in European cups. Villarreal had bad pre-season and in the first match under Escriba they've lost to Leganes on last weekend. Hosts have many absences for this match. Dos Santos, Cheryshev, Bakambu, Soldado, are injured, Victor Ruiz is suspended. All of them are first-choice players. New signings, Sansone and Espinoza, are also both unavailable. Three important footballers of previous term - Areola, Bailly and Denis Suarez - have all left the club in summer. Monaco have Falcao unavailable, but generally visitors have decent situation with the squad and in my opinion the French side are favourites of this clash. Last year Monaco faced Valencia in Champions League qualifications and they failed, although Monaco played well. Now, given Villarreal's problems, Leonardo Jardim's men shouldn't waste another opportunity.
