Wang Q. vs Gavrilova by Tennisguy

This is a first round match from the Wimbledon Grand Slam tournament between Daria Gavrilova from Australia and Qiang Wang from China.

This is going to be the first encounter between these two players. Gavrilova is ranked 56 compared to Wang who is 72.

I think this is going to be a fairly close encounter even do the odds are surely not suggesting that. I believe that Wang is the better player on grass and her game is more suited for this type of surface. In her career she has played 49 matches on grass court from which 32 are victories and 17 loses. Compared to her Gavrilova has only played 16 matches on grass courts and she has 8 won and 8 lost.

Last year both players had an early exit here at Wimbledon as they both lost in the first round.

Gavrilova is kind of a small player at 1.66 m and her volley shot is not really that good so I am not really inclined to think she will do well on this surface. On the other hand Wang at 1.74 m has a pretty strong serve I've seen her do quite well at the net so that's a good advantage to have.

Gavrilova does pack quite a punch in terms of hitting power but her strongest quality is her movement on the court. I'm not sure that she will be able to move as she wants in order to set herself for her usual shots and I actually think she will end up committing a lot of unforced errors. Wang's tennis is not really that flashy but on grass surface keeping it simple is the best way to go.

Overall I do think it's going to be a close match. Sure Gavrilova is the favorite do some good results that she managed against some top players , but to be honest she hasn't really proved anything on this grass surface. I believe that Wang can produce a surprise here and the odds are very high so I am backing her to take this one.
