Portugal vs Austria by FP

Portugal disappointed when only managing a 1-1 draw with Iceland after taking the lead with a first half Nani goal. Facing weak opposition they really should have taken the game by the scruff of the neck and pushed for a second goal which would have sealed the points.

As Christiano Ronaldo said, Iceland frustrated Portugal by putting ten men behind the ball and parking the bus in the net so to speak. Ronaldo: “They scored a goal, they created two chances in the 90 minutes but otherwise they got every player behind the ball. They put the bus in the net. So it’s difficult when one team doesn’t try, but Portugal tried to play football and tried to win the game. Iceland didn’t try anything, they were just defend, defend, defend and playing on the counter-attack. It was a lucky night for them. I thought they’d won the Euros the way they celebrated at the end, it was unbelievable. When they don’t try to play and just defend, defend, defend, this in my opinion shows a small mentality and they are not going to do anything in the competition.”

Both Ronaldo and his coach Fernando Santos are very confident about their teams chances of progression however and both have publically stated their belief that Portugal will win both their remaining games and reach the last 16.

Austria were poor in their first game. Most people expected a lot more from the team that what they delivered in their 2-0 defeat to Hungary, and they do not look to have the players to cope with Portugal. David Alaba is a good player but he does not have anywhere near the support from the other players to make Austria a force in this competition.

Expect Portugal to make more of their chances than they did in their first game. Ronaldo still has the chance of becoming the first player to ever score in four different European Championships and this may be something he achieves in this game. Also expect winger Ricardo Quaresma to start the game after being unfit to start the opener for Portugal. He will make a huge difference to the way Portugal play.
