Spain vs Turkey by FP

Spain are unbeaten European Championships since 2004, and place this record on the line on Friday night as they face Turkey in Group D.

Although they won the game 1-0 and controlled the game throughout against the Czech Republic they did need a very late goal to do so, Gerard Pique getting forward to grab the win for his team. I would think that Turkey are a weaker team than the Czech Republic so would expect Morata and his teammates to notch up more than one goal here.

The record between the two teams strongly suggests a Spain win also. Turkey have only managed one win against Spain, and that was back in 1954. Spain have only conceded one goal in their last six games against Turkey as well, so the stats point to a Spain win and a Spain clean sheet.

To keep the impressive stats going, Spain have won the last two European Championships and have gone an incredible 600 tournament minutes since conceding their last goal in the European Championships.

Time for some stats about Turkey. Out of the thirteen games they have played in the Euros to date they have conceded at least one goal in eleven of the games, and only managed to win three, losing eight. They did do well to reach the semi finals in 2008 however which was by far their strongest showing ever. Turkey lost 1-0 to Croatia in their first group game, and I would be surprised if they picked up anything against the defending championns.

Strange things happen in football, as demonstrated by Northern Ireland when they surprised everyone including me in grabbing their first ever European Championship win on Thursday, but I don’t think we are in for another surprise here. If we think Spain will win then our job is now to pick out the best bet. Spain are heavy odds on for the win at odds of around 1.45 which are simply too short. Spain will be patient and pass it around in their usual relaxed manner, but after nearly failing to score in their first match I do think there will be a bit more urgency about their game here. Once Spain score I can see them gathering confidence and going on to pinch another goal. The bet for me here is to back Spain to win by more than one goal at odds of 2.20. (6/5)

Bet: Spain -1 goal @ 6/5
