Portugal vs Iceland by FP
Portugal warmed up for Euro 2016 with a 7-0 thrashing of lowly Estonia, a game that told us little but would have given the players a bit of confidence going forwards. Talisman Ronaldo is obviously Portugal’s best player but he is no longer their only good player as they have a bit of talent coming through the ranks this year, the most high profile being teenager Renato Sanchez. Winger Ricardo Quaresma is a doubt for a starting position after suffering a minor muscle injury, an injury that will disappoint coach Fernando Santos as Quaresma was in fine form against Estonia in scoring twice and making two assists.
Iceland are making their first ever appearance in the finals of a major tournament, finishing second in their group behind the Czech Republic to qualify. They seem a hardworking team but a team lacking in real quality. Swansea man Gylfi Sigurdsson is the best known player in their ranks, with Cardiff City’s Aron Gunnarsson taking the captains armband. It says a lot about the lack of quality in the team that the 37 year old Eidur Gudjohnsen is still in the Iceland squad despite being way past his best nowadays.
Portugal look good to me to win this game. They faced Iceland twice in Euro 2012 qualification where they beat Iceland both times and traditionally do well in the group stages. Portugal have reached the semi finals in four out of their last six appearances at the European championships and have a good chance of making it five from seven this year. They have never lifted the trophy however, but that will not stop them from recording a win in this game.
