England vs Russia by bOdyssey

Well, I won’t bet often EURO matches but this one I just can’t miss. As I noted, I’ve been following Russian football since 2002 so will write in depth-view.

Let’s go. CSKA national team errr.. Russia national team sucks. It’s worst edition in my memory. Preliminary roster of 23 included 8 players from CSKA(!). You may see what the actual level of current CSKA is during Champions League matches or in matches against Zenit. CSKA can win 1-0 teams like Amkar, Ufa, win the title then but sucks in Europe. Every year the same story. Slutskiy (CSKA and Russia NT coach) called-up none player from Rostov (premier league runners-up) but took with squad CSKA’s bench player Golovin, LOL. Imagine if Hodgson call up Ibe instead of Vardy because Ibe plays in Liverpool and Reds are more famous team than Foxes are. Can’t imagine? Me too!

While Slutskiy can. Oh yes. Arguably the best player of current squad Dzagoev (54/10) is injured and will miss EURO. It is the irreplaceable loss and team will badly miss his amazing passes. Well. In last friendly against Serbia another key player Denisov (54/0) got injury and will also miss EURO.

So 2 certain starters are out. Most important starters. Now look at last friendly matches. 2-4 vs France (it could be bigger if France needed it). 1-2 vs CZE (terrible game) and 1-1 (another terrible game vs Serbia). Some may call it “just friendlies” but it’s current level of Russia NT. This team lack speed and just can’t imagine how 36 years old Ignashevich (certain starter) and 33 y.o Berezutski will stop Vardy. It will be fun.

This team don’t have good right back as both Shishkin and Schennikov look weak even in RPL. Without Denisov there is no actual CDM who can play “dog” role in defensive midfield zone, without Dzagoev they will lack creativity. The only bright spot is Shatov but against either Rose or Walker it will be touch task for him.

My money goes on Russia to be eliminated in group stage. In 2012 they were eliminated in group with CZE, Poland, Greece In 2014 were eliminated in group with S. Korea, Algeria and Belgium. Now they face England, Slovakia and Wales. Lose against England (with big margin), draw or lose against Slovakia and draw or lose against Wales. Without Dzagoev Russia is very weak. He is one of the most underrated players right now and the most important player of CSKA and Russia NT.

England has weak squad on paper (especially in heart of defense) but actually have very young and running squad. It probably won’t work against Spain or France but it will work against Russia as Russian players just can’t run and aren’t fast enough to compete with Vardy, Walker, Rose etc.

Even if England will have their worst game (like in last match vs Portugal) they still should win comfortably because, as I noted earlier, it’s worst Russia NT in my memory. Even in period between 2002 – 2006 (eliminated with Tunisia, Belgium and Japan in 2002), lost 1-7 to Portugal in qualifiers, failed to qualify to Germany 2006, failed in group stage in 2004 and lost some points against teams like Latvia, Estonia, lost 1-3 to Albania Russia still had better squad and played better football than right now. High stake for me.

Worthy pick, but partly nonsense preview overall... even a bit offensive for me as a Russian. No Rostov players, well, okay, do you know any? Rostov's attack is basically non-Russian players + Poloz, who lacks experience. And defence was all-CSKA in Russia's national team way, WAY before Slutsky. So maybe Rostov's goalie Soslan Dzanaev deserved a call, but Russia just naturalized Marinato Guilherme for national team, and Akinfeev and Logygin can't be left out, so there's just no place for him. Plus, Rostov's players never even played in the Champions League.

I understand your feeling but your comment is fan based. Vardy has also lack of experience but he was called-up, as was Ali, as was Drinkwater. Poloz played 30 matches in PL and scored 7 goals. Golovin started 6 matches(!!!) where scored 1 goal. and Golovin was called-up? LOL. Dzhanaev was best GK of season, he hasn't received call-up. Well. ?Is Shishkin better than Kudryashov from Rostov?

"Plus, Rostov's players never even played in the Champions League." And? Leicester players also never played in CL. Kane, Alo, Rose, Barkley etc also never played. Since when lack of champions league

Ugh, part of my comment was erased somehow. Anyway I was talking about that Denisov is not so important (played unwell last games, his club got relegated), defense may be old and slow, but very experienced. I as a Russian still think England will win as they are better in every component, but you clearly underestimate Russian team. Let's see tomorrow how easy it's gonna be for England.
