Austria vs Netherlands by Dartagnan

The Dutch have nothing to prepare for and nothing to play for except sticking it to the man. And "sticking" they are. After defeating promising Pollacks at their own Polish kingdom - they move up to another lesser team than Holland that actually qualified while the Dutch are preparing to watch the Euro 2016 on Phillips TV screens.

It feels sad that the Dutch will be at home while the likes of Hungary, Turkey, Iceland, Northern Ireland and even Albania will be playing at Euro. Not that I have anything against those fine teams that made it on their own terms and played an excellent soccer to deservedly be in the Euro. But, you must agree that in the year Johan Kruif was called from the heavens to bring tiki taka to there - it would be prosaic for the Dutch to win it all. The most unlucky team in the history of soccer is yet has to be out of the major tournament we usually count the days to and that is sad.

That reminds me the year the French were eliminated from qualifying for 1994 World Cup in the US by losing their last two matches at home needing a single point to qualify. That was disastrous for them. Again, all they needed was a single point and they had two home games against the teams they were supposed to beat easily - nevertheless get a single point in two games. But, they first lost to Israel 2-3 in an iconic match featuring the drama with Israeli Atar scoring the third goal at the 90th minute and the game after that losing to Bulgary - again, at home - losing again on 90th minute when Kostadinov struck for the second time in the game beating the French 2-1 and not only depriving them the needed point, but also advancing to the World Cup instead of them to present us then with one of the greatest sensation by beating the Germans who were the reigning World Champions 2-1 in Quarter Finals on Lechkov's header (only to lose their two following matches to Italy 1-2 in the Semis and to Sweden 0-4 in the game for the Third Place).

So, you ask me - what it all has to do with this peaceful friendly game between Austria and Holland?

Well, everything and nothing.

Holland, like France in 1994, did not qualify against all odds. And France went into such changes mentality and attitude wise that they won 1998 World Cup destroying poisoned Ronaldo (the fat one) and Brazil 3-0 in the Finals at the same Stad De France they lost those described above two games to Israel and Bulgary, and entering Zidane into our collective memory all the way thru till he decided top scratch his head with Materrazi's chest.

So, Holland has in mind exactly what I told you now playing the friendlies as their most motivational point is winning the next World Cup or at least Euro.

Well, I am not sure they will win one of those two - but I am a 10 units sure they will not lose this game to Austria they have beaten in all 5 games recently. pin

Great writing and a very good perspective IMO. Being a Turkish I am very sad that I can not watch the oranges in this tournament. I am also a Wesley fan. Despite I do not like my national team like I used to, I have no doubt that they deserved the finals. Besides they played semi final 2008 and they made the bronze medal in Japan 2002. Turks are a different kind of joy in such competitions like these :) They are unpredictable and very crazy. They can defeat the strongest team or they may play the most rubbish football. No one knows what system they have. I call it RUN RUN RUN AND NEVER GIVE UP

Thanks foxserkan for kind words.
I agree that Turkish national team - as the Turkey itself is ever mysterious in its evolution and revolution round the evolution. I can never understand why Turkey - who traditionally used to have great youth teams on National level - always lose something when maturing and another thing is that you could make a world class team from the Turkish origin players in various national teams. I don't even want to list. And if we stopped to discuss the Turkish player development - I still remember the World Cup Under 17 I think, or was it 19 - anyway - there was a

I'm going for Holland straight win. I hope they play the same lineup that played against Poland. I think they played quite well

it even holland played not convincing against Poland it's still worthy to support straight win against experimenting austrian team. my scenario for this game 1 half win by austrian and holland would wake up in second half by realizing they have nothing to lose nothing to play for, except just to win 2:1

Dear Dartagnan, the answer to your question is I guess lack of education. We have got big talents but they get spoiled so fast as they can not carry the fame and also Turkish media writing to much bull crab about them. This is a social problem of Turkey. I am afraid it will take long years for us to understand this. You know what I wish about those Turkish players playing in Europe? They should remain there never come and play in Turkey. Otherwise they will loose all they have.

@Wizardloo, I guess your bet is a bit risk but Holland as Dartagnan says are the value side here.

Good luck to
