St. Louis vs Arizona by Sors

Mike Leake (2-3 with a 4.66 ERA) takes the mound for the Cardinals against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday afternoon.

The right-hander is coming off two straight quality starts, in which he yielded 2 runs on 11 hits and struck out eight over fourteen innings in of an 8-1 win at Anaheim on May 10 and 5-2 victory at Dodger Stadium last Sunday.

Leake, however, had serious problems in his previous six starts this year, especially at Busch Stadium, where he’s posted a 5.76 ERA in four outings against the Brewers (4-6), the Cubs (0-5), the Washington Nationals (4-5) and the Phillies on May 4 (5-4).

In addition to that, the 28-year-old right-hander posted a 4.46 ERA in six starts against the Diamondbacks over the last three years, allowing 19 hits and 9 runs over 8 2/3 innings in the last two of them last season, while with Cincinnati.

Paul Goldschmidt (3-for-20) and Welington Castillo (3-for-18) have struggled against him, but Nick Ahmed is 2-for-3 with a double off Leake, Phil Gosselin is 2-for-4, with a homer, 3 RBI and a walk, Rickie Weeks is hitting .400 (6-for-15), with 2 HR and 3 RBI against Leake, while Jean Segura is 7-for-21, with a triple and a walk.Leake will get his first look at Chris Herrmann, who went 7-for-17, with a homer and 4 RBI over his last five games.

The Arizona Diamondbacks, who seek fourth win in five games, will counter with Robbie Ray (2-2 with a 4.46 ERA).The left-hander threw seven solid innings in his last start on Monday, when he yielded 6 hits and 2 runs, while striking out six in a 12-2 win against the Yankees.

On the other hand, he’s allowed five runs in three of his previous four starts and lasted less than six innings in each of those four outings.

In addition to that, Ray was hammered for 6 runs over three innings and walked five batters in his lone start against the Cardinals on Aug. 25, 2015 (1-9).

The Cardinals have totaled 20 runs and 23 hits in their last two games, scoring at least four runs in fifteen of their previous twenty three games at Busch Stadium this year (11-12).

The Arizona Diamondbacks scored 11 runs on 15 hits in Friday’s 11-7 win over the Cardinals and have 30 runs with a .300 batting average from the last four.

I think that we’ll see more than seven runs in the second game of this series.
