This is the FAI Cup, not the League Cup
League football is put to one side this weekend in Ireland as the FAI Cup returns. The cups return brings the big boys of Irish football to the table as all 20 league teams get involved for the first time this season with Dundalk starting the defence of the title they won last year by beating Cork City 1-0 after extra time.
This preview however focuses on the tie at the Sports Centre as the First Division side Waterford welcome the Premier League's Longford Town for this 2nd round match.
Anyone who knows anything about Irish football should know that these two sides have the worst defensive record in Irish league football. Waterford have shipped 28 goals in their 11 league matches so far, this tally isn't including the 7-0 hammering they received at the hands of Cork City in the League Cup last month. This isn't the first time Waterford have conceded 7 goals this season either as more recently Limerick put the same amount past them in a 7-2 rout. Luckily for Waterford they have unearthed a goal scorer this season in Paul Gorman who has so far netted 6 goals from his 8 games. The 34 year old will be hoping to add to his tally this Friday evening.
Waterford currently sit 6th in the First Division after back-to-back 3-1 home wins over UCD and Cabinteely.
The away side, Longford, have had a tricky start to the Premier League this season after a solid first season since regaining promotion. They currently lie bottom with only 1 win from their 13 league games so far and are 4 points from safety. They have conceded 30 goals from their 13 games and are without a clean sheet to their name since a 2-0 away win over Wexford Youths in the very first game of the season.
With both sides struggling to keep a clean sheet and the fact Waterford have seen 27 goals in their last 5 games, another goal fest is very possible.
