Pouille vs Murray by Igrok

Rome, semifinal, clay

Pouille (52) will play against Murray (3)

Pouille is probably the luckiest lucky loser in the history of tennis. He lost against Kukushkin in straight sets during the qualification and was granted a place after Tsonga withdrew. He then went on winning against Gulbis in 3 sets and Ferrer in straight sets. He is playing now his first ATP Masters semifinal due to the fact that Monaco retired for hip injury. As I have written before his main problem is his serve. He puts in low percentage of first serve, below 60% in this tournament and overall on clay on the last 52 weeks 55%. Murray is a fine returner, who registered almost 60% of return points won against Goffin.

Murray has been strong from the start so far in Rome. He hasn’t dropped a set yet and conceded maximum 6 games and he is looking to reach the second consecutive final after Madrid.

Pouille is a young gun but has no big experience at this level. He will be rested but he will also be under a lot of pressure. The only thing that could eventually play in his favour is that he never faced Murray, who historically doesn’t have a good feeling with Rome, so it could be that we will see a ‘learning’ period at the beginning of the match. I still believe thou that we will see Murray winning easily as he wants to keep energy for the final.
