The overall impression is that Algeria has been drawn in a relatively easy group (together with the teams of Ethiopia, Seychelles and Lesotho) and will be a huge surprise if this team to finish on 1st place.
Christian Gourcuff has called 24 players for the games against Ethiopia, the majority of them from the leading European leagues – mostly from the France Ligue 1, but also from La Liga, the Portuguese Primeira Liga, Premier League and Serie A.
Algeria has impressive results at home over the past two years, where the hosts have won nine of their last ten games, with one defeat in a friendly match against Guinea on Oct. 9, 2015 (1-2).Six of those ten games were won with two or more goals difference, including the last of them against Tanzania on Nov. 17 (7-0).
In the matter of fact, Ethiopia is right behind Algeria in the standings, with four points from its previous two games in this group against Lesotho (2-1/home) and Seychelles (1-1/away), but Algeria passed easily through Seychelles and Lesotho, while the guests had obvious problems against these two teams, especially in the visit in Seychelles in September.
Most of Ethiopia’s players are from the local league and only few of them play in Egyptian clubs, South African clubs or clubs from the lower divisions in Sweden, Norway and Turkey.
Ethiopia won only one point from three games at the African Nations Championship in January – tournament in which most of the teams use mainly youngsters or reserve players (0-3 vs. D.R. Congo, 0-0 vs. Cameroon and 1-2 vs. Angola).
Algeria is a much stronger team than Ethiopia and I think that the hosts are capable to cover this handicap.
