One of the main advantages for Pumas this season is that the hosts managed to keep all of their important players during the break and the team looks even more balanced with the new signings Mathias Vidangossy (midf.) from Palestino and Luis Enrique Quinones (forw.) from Santa Fe.
In the matter of fact, the hosts are still outside top 8 in the Mexican league, mostly because of their participation in this tournament, even though they remained undefeated in the last seven rounds (1-6-0 8/7).
Pumas began their campaign in the group stage of Copa Libertadores with two consecutive wins over Emelec on Feb. 19 (4-2/home) and Olimpia on March 2 (2-0/away), followed by a 0-2 loss in the visit in San Cristobal last Thursday.
However, there are two things that should be taken into account here: at first place – unlike the first two games against Emelec and Olimpia, the starting lineup for the last match was entirely from reserve players, but even under these circumstances, the hosts dominated in large periods of that game, especially during the second half.On the other hand, this match is very important for the further progress of Pumas in the tournament and there is no doubt that the hosts will start the game with the best possible lineup.
Luis Fuentes (def.) will most probably miss this match due to injury, as well as Francisco Meza (def.), but Meza is not a regular starter.
The guests won six points from three previous three games in group 7 (2-0-1 4/3) and still have good chances for further progress in the tournament.
However, like all teams from Venezuela, Deportivo Tachira relies almost entirely on its games in San Cristobal and although the guests showed solid play in defense in the previous three rounds, their problems in the visit to Emelec were obvious (0-2).
Alan Liebeskind (gk.), Gerzon Chacon (def.) and Agnel Flores (midf.) are out due to injuries, but these three players haven’t played a single minute in the previous three games in the tournament.
In my opinion, Pumas is a better and more balanced team than Deportivo Tachira, the hosts have potential to get far in the tournament, while home court advantage is another reason for my bet.
I think that the hosts are capable to cover this handicap.
