Corinthians vs Santa Fe by Sors
Corinthians are coming into this game on the back of six wins in eight competitive games in 2016 (6-2-0 11/4), four of them on this stadium against Piracicaba (1-0), Capivariano (2-1), Sao Paulo (2-0) and Oeste on Saturday (1-0).
Of course, most of those eight games were against mediocre teams from the state of Sao Paulo, but it doesn’t change the fact that the hosts played well in their previous match in this tournament (1-0 in the visit to Cobresal on Feb. 17), although they won three points after Miguel Escalona’s own goal in the last minute of that game.
The defense is definitely the strongest part of this team (despite the departure of two experienced players in Gil and Edu Dracena in December), as the hosts conceded only four goals in their previous eight games in 2016 and just one goal in four games at Arena Corinthians in this period.
On the other hand, Vagner Love (forw. / 14 goals last term) and Jadson (forw. / 13 goals last term) are already not a part of this team, which obviously leads to certain problems in attack, although the hosts can count on several good players in that zone in Giovanni Augusto (midf.), Elias (midf.), Angel Romero (forw.) and the new signings Alan Mineiro (midf.), Marlone (midf.) and Andre (forw.).
Elias (m / 2+0) and Marlone (m / 4+0) are out due to injuries, while Felipe (m / 6+0) remains doubtful.
Santa Fe has big ambitions in this tournament, which is not surprising, considering the fact the Colombians are the current holders of Copa Sudamericana.
The backbone of this team is almost unchanged compared to last season, which is a guarantee for solid defense and not so good efficiency in attack. In the matter of fact, we saw this in the first match of this team in Group 8, when Santa Fe won only one point at home against Cerro Porteno (0-0), despite the fact that the Colombians had overwhelming superiority in that game.
Yulian Anchico (m / 4+0) and Juan Valencia (m / 2+0) are out due to injuries, but none of them is a regular starter.
Corinthians is better team than Santa Fe and I think that the Brazilians will manage to win three points from this match, despite the fact that they will face an opponent, whose defense is among the best in South America.
