In the last game in the quaterfinals at the World Women's Handball Championships the host nation, Denmark will host Romania at Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning. Denmark has been touted as one of the big favorites to win the title but a big role in this consideration has been played by the fact that they host the competition without having a squad at the levels of Norway, Russia or Montenegro. The danes have won the easy matches in the group stage with Japan and Tunisia, lost comprehensibly against Hungary and Montenegro and benefited from an horrendous second half of the first period of Sweden in the game in the R16 to score in this period with a partial of 10-1, enough to secure an indelible lead throughout the match. Romania has disappointed in the group matches that mattered against Spain (especially), Norway and Russia, but showed another face against the current World Champion, Brazil. Romania's game has been far from impressive, but the number of silly turnovers has been limited, other players other than Cristina Neagu have contributed brilliantly especially Bradeanu, also Buceschi, Elisei, Nechita. Ungureanu has been imposing between the goalposts, Szucs and Perianu have been spot on in defence.
Romania has also the advantage in H2H in the last 10 years, period in which these two teams have played 8 official matches with Romania winning 5 of them and Denmark only two. The most important match was the one in the small final at the EC in 2010, also in Denmark, also in Herning when Romania won by 1, 16-15.
I think this match will be quite evenly contested, I haven't been impressed by neither of these two teams by now, I doubt that any will stand a chance in the semis against Norway/Montenegro, but tonight I belive Romania has a better chance than the odds suggest.
