Newport vs Yeovil by Arneytips
Yeovil Team News- Swansea loanee Connor Roberts has extended his stay and is likely to start. Two other loanees Josh Sheehan and George Thomas return from international duty. Jakub Sokolick is suspended.
Todays game at Rodney Parade is obviously a huge bottom of the table clash but between two teams in contrasting veins of form and will also be the first time these teams have played each other in league football.
Newport have come into a great run of form being unbeaten in their last 4 games winning 2. This improvement in form under John Sheridan has lifted them off the bottom of league 2 to 21st place, 4 points clear of the relegation zone. What has been even more remarkable has been during this run the teams they took points off were in the top half of the table- Wycombe, Bristol Rovers, Northampton and Accrington. Although Newport were disappointed that they had to play Brackley in a replay in the FA cup midweek, they put that issue to bed with a 4-1 victory. They may be at a slight disadvantage today as Yeovil won their FA cup tie first time round and so haven't had to play midweek. Despite their good form Newport have failed to win at Rodney Parade this season, losing 5 of their 8 games at home.
Paul Sturrock's Yeovil can't buy a win at the moment and look to be in real danger in 23rd place on just 10 points. Although against lower league opposition, Yeovil put in a spirited performance against Maidstone in the FA cup in which they were reduced to 9 men and had played much of the game with 10 men and despite this they came out with a 1-0 victory. However, I cannot see bottom side Dagenham getting anything at high flying Oxford so if Yeovil fail to win today then they can slip to the bottom of the league if the daggers win their game in hand. Yeovil have failed to win their last 9 league games, losing 6 and are in 23rd place in league 2 on 10 points. Scoring goals is not an issue for them as they have hit the net 19 times this season with top scorer Ryan Bird scoring 7 of those and is obviously one to look out for. However Yeovil's main problem has been at the back where they have conceded 31 goals this season, nearly 2 goals per game and the worst defensive record in league 2.
I think this will be a close game between two teams who are desperate to get out of the dog fight at the bottom of league 2. Although Newport have the worst home record in league 2, I think they are looking a much better team and are playing with confidence so I think they will edge this game today and pick up their first home win of the season.
