Chelsea vs Southampton by FP
Chelsea lost again in midweek to continue their poor start to the season and keep Jose Mouinho firmly under pressure despite leading the team to the Premier League title just a matter of months ago. Although FC Porto are a good Champions League side, we have come to expect more from Chelsea and they have been a million miles away from the brilliant form they showed last season. Both defence and attack has been weak over the last two months and ‘the special one’ will need to put this right and quickly if they are to pick up any silverware at the end of the season.
Although captain John Terry has appeared to be the fall-guy in public after being dropped, I think the main difference this year has been Eden Hazard. He was one of the worlds best players last season and was scoring goals and creating chances for fun. This year he has not been effective, and significantly does not appear to be doing the defensive side of his duties very well which is leaving Chelsea exposed. New boy Pedro is the same on the other wing, and both full backs are exposed regularly. Mourinho appears to have little confidence in either Remy or Falcao but one of them surely has to start as Diego Costa starts his suspension, Remy looks the stronger of the two options. I also think Mourinho will keep faith with Hazard, although it wouldn’t surprise me if Willian has forced his way into the starting line up after being one of the few Chelsea players to impress this season and maybe takes the place of Pedro.
Southampton over achieved last season but are performing more or less to expectation now. They are not a top 5 Premier League club and should finish the season around 8th in my opinion. Ronald Koeman is doing a good job and is delivering entertaining football, although the team are not the most consistent as demonstrated by their last three Premier League games – won one, drawn one, lost one. Last time out saw Southampton beat Swansea 3-1 at home. Graziano Pelle and Sadio Mane look the two main threats to Chelsea’s backline and Ivanovic will have to play better than he has been doing if he is to keep Mane quiet.
Mourinho seems to be at his best when his back is against the wall, and as he did against Arsenal when the pressure built up I think he will deliver a Chelsea victory. Stamford Bridge is still a very tough place to go and play, and Chelsea simply cannot afford another slip up. This may get nervy if Chelsea do not score in the first half, but I think Chelsea will do enough to take away the three points
