he home side this week were left frustrated last time out, with a draw against Asteras Tripolis yielding just one point in a game they should have won. This week they’ll be hoping to turn their fortunes around after their weekend defeat to Slavia Prague in the domestic league. They have accumulated 17 points from their first 8 league games, winning 5 of those fixtures. There success thus far in the league has been built on a solid defence, conceding just 5 times in their opening 8 fixtures, averaging a goal conceded every 144 minutes in the league.
Lukas Vacha is ruled out with a knee injury, with central midfielder Marek Matejovsky missing through suspension.
APOEL too were left downbeat after the first match of this year’s group stage, having lost 3-0 to FC Schalke at home in Cyprus. Since that loss however the side have come up trumps, taking two wins from two games to see them maintain their place at the top of Cyprus’ premier division of football. Midfielder Vinicius is suspended for the Cypriots, Kostakis Artymatas is likely to replace the Brazilian in midfield.
Sparta are fairly strong favourites to win and have the look of a side which is finally getting back towards being at least a minor force in this competition if not the Champions League in the years to come. They have been pretty unlucky not to make that competition in the past couple of seasons after narrow qualifying defeats otherwise more people would be familiar with them. With home advantage, they should have too much class for APOEL. Sparta are likely to be positive throughout though and the goals should come as they have done for them in Europe against better teams than APOEL. I will confidently tip them to overcome the tight and frustrating tactics of the Cypriots and go with the -1 Asian handicap win.
