Taylor Phinney vs Vasil Kiryienka by AlQahira
Another matchup I really like from the 2015 UCI Road World Championships - Men's Time Trial is the one between the american Taylor Phinney and the belarussian Vasil Kiryienka. These two are podium contenders, I cannot see them overpassing Tony Martin or Rohan Dennis, but they could dethrone a fatigued Dumoulin for the 3rd spot. Taylor Phinney represents one of the most inspiring stories in world sport of the last years. Last year at the national championships in Chattanooga in the descent from Lookout Mountain he suffered a horrendous crash and albeit being only 24 yo at the time many said this is game over for the american. After a long and arduous 15 month recovery period Phinney has stormed back into the professional peloton with imposing performances in the Tour of Utah and Tour of Colorado in the month of august and he actually won a stage in the latter, the state where he was born.
It was mind-boggling for him even to make the selection for the Worlds in the USA team let alone being as impressive as he has been in the team time trial where he has proven an important cog in the BMC's perfect machinery. He said that he feels at the moment that he is in the best condition he has ever been so I see no problem for him fighting for the medals.
Kiryienka, the belarussian tractor, is no mug by all means, in fact he's a brilliant time trialist; he took 3rd in 2012 when Phinney placed 2nd in Valkenburg, and has been hovering around the podium in the last two editions after strong trifectas comprising Martin, Cancellara and Wiggins in Firenze (2013) and Wiggins, Martin and Dumoulin in Ponferrada last year. He also won the TT in Giro this year (without facing stiff competition it has to be said) but in the recently concluded Vuelta a Espana in the ITT he only managed a 4th place behind the likes of Bodnar and Valverde.
Kiryineka has been the engine of a depleted Sky team that finished honorably, on 9th place sunday in the TTT but with Phinney as strong as he looks at the moment and as motivated as he is I doubt "Robocop" will be able to match the american today.
