Grays Athletic vs Staines Town by Hassy
League leaders Grays Athletic suffered their defeat of the season after 9 games without a loss. The defeat was to a tough Bognor Regis side who themselves have aspirations of the title so is not a major concern. A Jason Prior penalty and subsequent red card to defender Jay Leader, followed by an Alfie Rutherford goal saw a resolute Bognor Regis side defeat the Blues last Saturday. Results elsewhere meant they maintained top spot, but make no mistake, manager Mark Bentley will be looking for the aforementioned reaction Wednesday evening.
Despite the defeat on Saturday, Grays have a good home record at Mill Field. They have won 3 and drawn 1 out of 5 matches. The 3 wins have all come against Essex rivals which used to be an Achilles heel of recent Blues sides. What will also be pleasing is that they were also all clean sheets.
Staines last outing on Saturday saw them defeat East Thurrock United 3-2 with the goals coming from Cox, M'bengui and Wanadio. The result moved The Swans up to 11th in the table as they look to regroup following relegation from the Conference South last season. Staines have recently lost 7-0 to Brentwood and as far as I am aware there wasn't any real reason behind this.
As usual, midweek games at this level always favours the host due to work commitments and the travelling. A trip on across the M25 during rush hour isn't ideal preparation for any game and I will be backing the home side to win and stay top of the league after tonight.
